Change is constant and there’s always a learning curve. Such was the case around 2017, as pressure built toward more cage-free housing systems for egg-laying hens. “As we move forward, we have to think about what the next trends will be,” Dawn Koltes, PhD, Iowa State University, told attendees of the 2024 PEAK conference. Among those trends is the push to reduce antibiotics or antibiotic substances in animal diets. Antibiotic alternatives driving the conversation include prebiotics, probiotics and direct-fed microbials, as well as phytobiotics and phytogenics. Because baseline information on the hen’s microbiota makeup is limited, Koltes and her research team set out to fill in some of the blanks. I am delighted to announce a Special Issue of Animals on "Microbiota in the Poultry Gastrointestinal Tract: Implications for Health, Nutrition, and Productivity". As the guest editor for the special issue, I am excited to invite contributions from researchers, scholars, and experts around the world. This special issue focuses on the role of intestinal microbiota in poultry health, nutrition, and productivity. With recent advancements in nucleotide sequencing technologies, our understanding of how the intestinal microbiota influences nutrient digestion, immune system development, metabolism regulation, and overall bird welfare has increased. We are looking for original research papers, reviews, and insightful perspectives that shed more light on the intricate interactions between the intestinal microbiome and its host and how these can be employed to enhance poultry production and health. I hope that my experience working in this area at CQUniversity's CQUni Agriculture will contribute to creating an insightful special issue that contributes to the development of this research field. I am happy to share that the latest research from our lab is now available online. This study utilized advanced X-ray scanning techniques, including DEXA and Micro-CT, to investigate the bone quality of broilers fed diets containing varying methionine to cysteine ratios under coccidiosis challenge. Our findings indicate that adjusting methionine to cysteine ratios in broiler diets has the potential to enhance bone health. This highlights the importance of optimizing dietary strategies for improved skeletal health and welfare in poultry production. https://lnkd.in/gekMwNxE
