As our environments of work and home profoundly changed through lockdowns, value was shown where it had previously been overlooked, and new possibilities for how we occupied our physical environments emerged – sometimes radically. Alongside these rapid adaptations, climate impacts and significant rises in living costs have been exerting their own influence on the patterns of our daily urban life. What’s this now mean for our disrupted city centres? What economic, social, and cultural rhythms do we want to see develop in the future? In the aftermath of the pandemic, what lessons and values about the importance of the CBD as a key hub now guide us? Just what is the future of the Australian CBD? Join leading figures from across government, the arts, business and the built environment in a dynamic panel discussion. This event will be held at the Edge in Federation Square, and is presented in partnership with ALSPEC and Open House Melbourne. When: Thursday 9 May 2024 Time: 4:30pm arrival, 5pm start. Finishing at 6:30pm Where: The Edge, Federation Square, Melbourne VIC 3000 Panellists: Cr Nicholas Reece – Deputy Lord Mayor, City of Melbourne Philip Oldfield – Head of School, Built Environment, Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture, UNSW Kellie Payne – Director, Workplace Strategy Team, Bates Smart Katrina Sedgwick - Director & CEO at Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation (MAP Co) Mark Tait - Group Executive & Head of Development, Investa

Anthony Harris AIA, LEED AP, CDT, a senior architect at Quinn Evans, shares his insights on the transformative renovation of the Capital One Arena in a recent article by the Washington Business Journal. The piece highlights how local architects would reimagine the arena and its adjacent areas. In the article, Anthony emphasizes the area's significance as a focal point for civic and social infrastructure while also highlighting the opportunity for sustainability initiatives. "Sports teams, at their best, can be points of pride and connection, acting as civic institutions as that contribute to a city's identity. This can be especially vital to a city as diverse and transient as the District...[A] modernized Capital One Arena provides an opportunity for the building and the site to embrace its role as a civic asset – contributing not just to the commercial revitalization of the area but also to the civic and social infrastructure of a neighborhood. Capital One Arena could fundamentally reimagine the role of the sports arena by becoming a locus of social life and activity beyond game days or special events, providing a function for residents as well as fans and concert-goers." It’s been such a natural fit for an org like Centre for Public Impact to collaborate with WonderLab on a Melbourne DesignWeek offering! We both love learning and a few things have really made a more mutual learning posisble. 💡Generosity of ideas and a clear commitment to working in relational, creative and affirming ways, (which seems to be part of the dna of how WonderLabbers show up in engagements), means we build/maintain relationships, and can have more trust in eachother, curiosity about differences in opinion, and give and receive feedback well. 📆I think having the scheduled time available with the explicit intent of testing ideas and getting feedback is one of the most impactful and easy to implement hacks to build a culture of learning. It’s also bloody hard to protect space and time for learning and build habits as a team. 3….? I’m super curious what others are doing to develop practice, and hold space for learning from and with eachother. What’s your favorite tip, or something you’ve seen done well?!
🌟 How do you develop practice in your community? 🌟 In a format designed by our director Lisa Grocott, one of the mainstays of our practice community is the 'playtest' - where we prototype workshops before we facilitate them with stakeholders or the public. We also 'playdate' - taking an idea that might be useful for many peoples' practice and playing it out together. This is a regular entry in our shared calendar, and anyone can grab a spot. Our Melbourne Design Week workshops for this week have all been through this process, helping to refine their flow and share practice on facilitation and co-design (woot-woot 🎉 to workshop leaders Anna Conrick, Myfanwy Doughty, Lisa Grocott, Leander Kreltszheim and Allison Edwards). This process knits us together as a community, building generative vulnerability in how we present, and generosity in how we respond to others' work (with thanks to Rachelle Chadwick's 2023 great paper on feminist critique). We all get to learn from these gatherings, and the community gets stitched together across multiple projects and ideas. How do you approach this community building work in your context? #upcoming BK Expo and Talks. Room for Housing. (Four) visions of integrated habitats in the Netherlands April 2nd, Opening at 17.00, BK Talks at 18.00 The exhibition "Room for Housing" in the Netherlands tackles the pressing issue of housing shortage as part of a broader spatial puzzle that includes energy transition, climate adaptation, circularity, industry, agriculture, infrastructure, and nature. TU Delft’s Vision Team Wonen, a multidisciplinary expert group, has gathered recommendations on the Dutch housing challenge. This led to the advisory report “Ruimte voor Wonen: Naar een integrale aanpak van de Nederlandse woonopgave” (Space for Living: Towards an integrated approach to the Dutch housing challenge). The exhibition “Room for Housing” accompanies the report, providing a visual representation of the future that these recommendations can lead to, through four visualisations commissioned to recent graduates from our Faculty. Join us in the Oostserre on April 2nd for the exhibition opening, followed by a BK Talks. The conversation, —moderated by Javier Arpa Fernández, Curator of Public Programs— will explore diverse approaches to addressing the housing shortage in the Netherlands by intertwining housing, energy transition, climate adaptation, circularity, industry, agriculture, infrastructure, and nature. #bktalks #bkpublicprograms #bkpublicprograms2023 #architecture #urbanism #landscape #buildingtechnology #studentslife #buildings #bouwkunde #design #builtenvironment #BKAfrica #BKPublicPrograms #BKExpo #BKTalks #Bouwkunde #BK #TUDelft #Exhibition #BuiltEnvironment #visualisation #housingcrisis #netherlands #wooncrisis #illustrations #VisionTeam

ARCHITEKTUR MACHT SCHULE! Our September/October newsletter focuses on how school buildings are always a reflection of societal development. We need spaces that promote social skills, encourage independence, and help children and young people find orientation in a rapidly changing world. In short, educational institutions today see themselves as "spaces for teams". A well-structured spatial framework where individuals collaborate in various configurations, along with areas for retreat to foster individual concentration or relaxation. These educational buildings and their outdoor spaces are places of encounter where children and young people can grow together, develop a sense of community, unleash creativity, and practice democracy. Some of our new school buildings illustrate what this can look like in practice. FORM FOLLOWS LIFE REINVENTING CITIES DESIGNING FOR LIFE In this competition, we challenge participants to reimagine urban spaces through the lens of life (including human, plant and animal). Proposals should develop an approach to shape cities as systems supporting life and enhancing its relational qualities, rather than as productive and efficient ‘machines’. Participants are invited to submit designs that showcase the transformation of urban spaces into thriving ecosystems that respect and reflect the complex interdependencies of life. The designs should explore radical approaches towards the rethinking and designing of urban spaces. / towards “form follows life” (principle inviting form to promote and enhance life’s web of relationships, interdependence, and mutual thriving - Olivia Bina inspired by Gilles Clément and Patrick Geddes).

The accessible tourism market is worth $13.5 billion in Australia and represents upto 24% of the population. With figures like that, tourism operators can’t afford not to be catering for accessible visitors. But more importantly there are other benefits. Accessibile visitors who have great experiences are much more likely to repeat visit, they travel in groups with carers and family members and they also tend to travel more in off peak or shoulder seasons. Accessibile visitors also contribute to positive outcomes in staff morale, job satisfaction and of course the visitor benefits from incredible visitor experiences which can lead to word of mouth promotion. Im proud to have been part of an organisation that has won a Tourism Hall of Fame award for our accesible visitor experiences. Catering for accessible visitors doesnt have to be hard or expensive. It all starts with a decision to do something. Getaboutable run great information sessions and this webinar is a great - and free - opportunity to learn more about an essential part of strengthening your organisation and your visitor experience.
