I had a blast interviewing folks like Farrah Bostic, Stasia Mitchell, Thamina Stoll and Erika Sinner for my latest Forbes article: How Companies Can Attract And Retain Gen Z Talent: This summer, an estimated two million people graduated with bachelor’s degrees. The majority of them were born in 2002, and they are now flooding the workforce. They’re also entering the workforce in the middle of a vibecession, (an actual term coined by a Gen Z-er and picked up by the NYTimes and other media outlets) meaning the general public hasn’t been totally clear as to whether or not the U.S. is in a recession, with vague economic indicators driving companies to make layoff decisions and then scramble to hire new talent. Needless to say, this workforce is going to have a very different outlook on what they want from their careers, their lives and the impact they want to have on society. More on how companies can address the needs of an evolving workforce here. https://lnkd.in/eqEv-6Cm

Recently the job market has been a bit unsteady. This makes financial preparedness more important than ever, especially for women whose careers are more likely to be impacted by economic downturns. This was made crystal clear during the COVID-19 pandemic, where women’s jobs were 1.8 times more vulnerable to the crisis than men’s (Mckenzie Global Institute Study) With company layoffs becoming a frequent headline, let’s talk about building a solid plan to navigate potential job loss and maintain financial stability. A timely post from me today... No, I’m not here to weigh in on the US election…but it’s got me thinking. Just last week in my company update, I flagged the continued/rising hiring trend we’ve been seeing at Forme Partners this year: a real surge of American talent flocking to the EU. With the US election happening today, it begs the question—will this trend hold, or will the US make moves to keep its top talent at home? Despite lower pay (which in our experience is becoming more of a level playing field) and a so-called “business-unfriendly” environment, the EU is a hotspot for seasoned US operators, drawn by the rise in unicorns and the promise of high-growth opportunities. It’s a fascinating shift, and as the election unfolds, I’ll be watching to see if Europe’s appeal continues to win over top talent or if the landscape shifts again. #TalentTrends #HighGrowthMarkets #CrossBorderOpportunities

The UK redundancy rate is at the highest it’s been in the UK since 2021 (ONS), with new news every week of organisations making waves of cuts (John Lewis / Channel 4, Sky, Amazon, Google and more). Redundancy hits everyone hard, but the later you are in your career, the harder it is to come back from it. In the UK there are 800,000 >50’s who would like to return to work (Demos Think Tank); and this age group are far less likely to return to work in the 3 months after having been made redundant. The skills of telling your story and learning to cut through on platforms like Linked In are not what those of us who are later in their careers grew up with. Unlike ‘Generation Sell’, as the NYT coined Gen Z, Millennials and Baby Boomers are more inclined to think of self promotion and storytelling as ‘ick’ and be unaccustomed to the skills that are so essential on a platform that has 65m people searching for jobs every week. (Kinsta.com) LookUP wants to solve this problem. We are hosting a free event with LinkedIn and Major Players | B Corp™ to help anyone who has been made redundant recently to supercharge their story to get the job they want. It’s by no means for the 50+ audience only, but we particularly want to help experienced individuals that we know are struggling in a competitive job market. It’s a breakfast event on the 12th June, hosted at Linked In, with the following format: 1 hr Personal Brand Storytelling Workshop from LookUP 15m ‘Rock Your Profile’ session from LinkedIn with Q&A 30m panel with LookUP, LinkedIn In and Joanne Lucy from Major Players | B Corp™ 15m Close & Q&A Please do pass on far and wide, we have 30 places up for grabs! The link is in the comments. A big thanks to David Walsh for helping us to make this happen. #redundancy #personalbrand #storytelling Matthew Hook
