--- time passed = tech debt amassed --- Who's ready for Q4 refactoring time?! Like death and taxes, tech debt is a fact of life. Cloud provider changes and deprecations (looking at you AWS...), engineer turnover, emergency modifications, etc. all lead to tech debt. Make sure you are performing regular audits, use tools such as AWS Config to keep an eye on changes, and have a fairly rigid, but agile friendly change control process. I talk about this a ton, so I won't go too deep. Drop any crazy tech debt you've found in the comments, or just brag about how your organization never gets tech debt without mentioning you only have one engineer and 3 t2.micros. Why Self-Hosted Solutions Trump “Serverless” BS? In the age of "serverless" solutions, it's easy to overlook the benefits of self-hosting. While serverless promises scalability, you're often trading off control, performance, and reliability. When you rely on serverless, you're at the mercy of your provider. Your workflows are limited by their constraints. Costs can add up quickly, with egress fees and hidden charges. And if you want to switch providers? Good luck. Self-hosting, on the other hand, gives you: - Full ownership of your infrastructure and data - Customizable performance tailored to your needs - Freedom from vendor lock-in and surprise costs It may require more effort upfront, but self-hosting pays off in the long run. By building systems on your own terms, you can innovate without constraints. Sometimes, the best way to scale is to take control of your own infrastructure.

This tweet popped up on my feed this morning. I feel strongly that this narrative is damaging on so many levels and I needed to share a more measured perspective. Running applications on premises, cloud hosted, cloud native, or serverless can all yield tremendous success. The job of an architect and tech leader is balance the people, product, and skills of an organization to deliver the best solution that meets a matrix of requirements. These requirements might include maintenance, cost, performance, and durability among others. Do your analysis for your own environment. Serverless has been proven at scale to be performant, easy to maintain, and be cost effective. You'll never hear from me that because you picked k8s or decided to roll your own that your product is doomed or that you are too "modern". Knowing your build and delivering simple solutions is called pragmatism. https://lnkd.in/gZ_m4pz8
