As we slide into a new year, we’ve summarized our three key takeaways from 2024. 1. Cyber is, whether we like it or not, a component of aviation security. Bad actors are targeting airlines and airports. Operators can’t wait for requirements and need to go on the offense. Meanwhile, AVSEC regulators should not over-regulate but rather create a race to the top incentive structure and empower private sector cyber talent good guys to do their thing. #ittakesavillage 2. Nope, we can’t handle growing passenger volumes with the current approach. Sure, we said in 2022 and 2023 that passenger volumes were on the rise, but somehow industry operators were focused on proving out new tech and approaches in a linear manner. TSA screened more than 3 million passengers in one day at the end of this year! Maybe we now fully grasp that we can’t do things linearly but need step change and some risk consumption to address the passenger tsunami that’s going to hit us in the years ahead. #biometrics #automation #selfservice #differentiation 3. Testing and evaluation of security equipment is a burning platform in our sector. There’s just not enough T&E capacity available to qualify and get to market the full range of equipment (hardware + software) aviation needs to address evolving threat and passenger growth globally. The status quo won’t cut it. Existing institutions are relevant and should remain, but governments must hand-off non-critical activities to the private sector and focus on expediting standards development and core detection-related qualification, not letting the perfect be the enemy of the good. #wecandoit 2024 reminded us how many exceptional colleagues we have working these issues day-to-day, and how we feel confident that, together, we can rise to the challenge. Happy New Year colleagues and friends. May 2025 bring you happiness, good health, and much success. #lamlha #newyear #newopportunity #avsecmatters #paxfacilitationmatters #yourworkmatters

Catch Me If You Can in a digital age. Catch Me If You Can is based on the life of Frank Abagnale who, in one of his many offenses as a con artist, posed as an airline pilot “catching a flight home” to get free rides often fooling Airport security and others. This year, white hat researchers Ian Carroll and Sam Curry discovered a flaw in the Cockpit Access Security System (CASS) and Known Crewmember (KCM) programs that could allow threat actors to bypass certain airport security systems and potentially pose as flight crew members. KCM is a TSA program that allows security officers to verify the identity and employment status of crewmembers to bypass security screening, and CASS allows airline gate agents to rapidly determine if a pilot is authorized for an aircraft’s cockpit jump seat, a seat utilized by crew commuting or traveling. FlyCASS is a third party, web-based CASS and KCM application employed by smaller airlines. Ian Carroll and Sam Curry found a SQL injection vulnerability in FlyCASS which gave them administrative management of the list of pilots and flight attendants associated with the targeted airline. Carroll and Curry were able to create and add a fictitious new employee to the KCM and CASS databases to verify their findings. The issue was reported to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), ARINC (KCM system operators), and the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). In response to their report, the FlyCASS service was disabled in the KCM and CASS system and the identified issues were patched much to the dismay of terrorists and aspiring Frank Abagnale copy-cats alike. #fso #fsoconsultants #nationalsecurity #airport #TSA #industrialsecurity #whitehat #FAA
