During a personal project I had the opportunity to study the ISS and in doing so I became passionate about the space sector. It is thanks to the #ISS and ESA's #Rosetta Mission that I have embarked on this scientific career.
The International Space Station is humanity's home in space. The space station has been occupied since 2000, and today, more than 40% of the habitable volume of the Station is manufactured in Italy. Italy fabricated the Node-2 Harmony, the Node-3 Tranquility, and the Cupola and contributed to the Columbus European laboratory. With the launch of the Leonardo logistic module in March 2001, Italy became the third nation after Russia and the United States to orbit an ISS element. Sustainability, the motto of the IAC 2024, is one of the guiding principles of all activities on board the ISS. Honored to chair the operator and space agency-led discussion on common #standards in #spacesituationalawareness today for the Atlantic Council. From #RSOs to #TLEs, sovereign and operator delegates agreed to establish minimum standards for data sharing to enable a new era of #SSA coordination. Groundbreaking to say the least, and creating value for more #spaceindustry operators in spades.

The advent of satellite constellations, the miniaturization of payloads, and private companies' access to space have significantly increased the number of objects launched into orbit. Space debris is a global concern and represents a hazard for space activities. Thanks to the investments promoted for the Space Debris Laser Ranging (SDLR) of Matera, Italy is at the forefront of the sector. The SDLR will be able to locate and identify the trajectory of artificial objects in orbit, from Leo to Geo orbits. Actually, the observation station foresees the development of the first national laser sensor entirely dedicated to Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST). Several sessions of the #IAC2024 will focus on analyzing possible solutions for the problem of space debris. These sessions will address the multiple aspects of Space Traffic Management and Space Situational Awareness, including safe operations in space dealing with Space Debris, operational observations, and orbit determination.
