A HUGE thank you to whomever anonymously donated $100 to our campaign yesterday -- can we double it today?! Happy work-anniversary to me! Six months ago, I ventured out of the world of K-12 into my current role with the YMCA's Community Development branch. I love our branch and the work we do for many reasons. Over the next few days, I am going to share why. Today is all about STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). Our branch partners with schools and other organizations who serve majority low-income populations in order to provide FREE after-school STEAM programming. In 2024, we engaged 434 students in St. Louis and the Metro East in a number of free STEAM programs where learners were able to do things like build and fly an underwater robot, engineer their very own sports drink, use math-based strategy to draft their dream team of NBA players, and envision their future worlds through virtual reality. This semester, I had the opportunity to lead one of my favorite programs that we offer, Techbridge Girls, which focuses on building the next generation of female engineers and inventors. You can see some pictures of my favorite moments below. Today, I am seeking donations to support our after-school STEAM programs. According to the US Department of Defense, in the next decade 80% of jobs will require STEM skills. When you sponsor a child at La Casa de Esperanza's Charter School, you are directly impacting a student's education. Funds raised through the Sponsor a Child campaign help us cover costs not fully funded through the state, such as our after-school programming, LEAP. Leap (La Casa de Esperanza After School Program) provides students with an hour of academic support after school. This gives students individualized support and an opportunity to work in small groups to improve in the areas where they are struggling. Your contributions will also help us cover programs such as Special Education, STEM: Project Lead the Way, and our Math and Reading Interventionist, who provide one-on-one support ensuring our students have the tools they need to succeed.
