Innovations in #AI and technology are revolutionizing how we monitor our planet. By embracing open-access data and releasing it early and often, we accelerate the cycle of improvement, ensuring our tools are always evolving to meet the challenges of climate and nature conservation. This transparency empowers everyone with the insights needed to protect and restore our natural world. I frequently post AI, climate, ecology and other news here on LinkedIn. This is the byproduct of my long-running EcoSearch site (a personal side project that dates back to my PhD research) which includes AI news, search, RSS, and API at https://lnkd.in/eDdQ2NSV. As I train my models, I come across articles to share. The front end doesn't look like much but behind the scenes I am using AI to identify the best news on AI and other topics. I am in the process of transitioning from traditional to semantic search based upon vector similarity. As you can see, for decades I have been aggregating and amplifying large amounts of quality content on important topics for the human family and our one shared biosphere. Let me know if you are interested in learning more. #AI #EcoSearch #ecology

Australia’s unique natural ecosystems are under threat from invasive species, climate change, expanding human development, deforestation, bush fires and more. QUT computer scientist Paul Roe and ecologist Daniella Teixeira have teamed up with Google Australia, using acoustics and AI to listen to the sounds of the bush and identify native animals such as glossy black cockatoos. https://bit.ly/4aYxR4w #QUT #QUTResearch #QUTScience #QUTRealFocus #AI

Are you an early career ocean professional or new to the ocean science scene? We would like to hear your feedback on your vision and thoughts about the potential of digital twins of the ocean and related applications towards protecting and restoring marine ecosystems, safeguarding coastal communities, informing climate change actions and using marine resources in a sustainable way? How should these initiatives be set up to respond to the needs of future generations? what are the most pressing issues? what are the challenges? Have your say by filling in this short survey: https://lnkd.in/ejf-buM2 The outcomes of the survey will be fed into our UN Ocean Decade satellite event on 9 April 9h30 - 11h30. https://lnkd.in/d56uDzUB The oceans are a major source of biodiversity and food. The preservation of the quality of the food chain, as well as of life underwater in general is a primary concern for society. However, observing water media routinely is a complex task that remote sensing technology empowered by AI can unlock. © ClimateChangeAI @Enviro_Climate

High integrity carbon credits (no cheating!) finance nature protection and slow climate change. Equinor and Space Intelligence have cooperated in putting together a platform which can profile projects with high carbon efficacy, biodiversity benefits and demonstrated community benefits. Equinor's motive in supporting this development is to help restore trust to nature based climate solutions. NbS can be a ("the?") key mechanism to protect and restore tropical forests, but only if you can verify that 1 ton of credits has an equivalent and real change on the ground. With this new platform we will see the change in habitat, change in carbon, and change in biodiversity year by year as a project develops. The platform will work at project scale or jurisdictional scale, or with nested projects. Another key element which Ed Mitchard, Murray Collins and the project team were keen to incorporate was the ability to track forest degradation ... just as important maybe as deforestation. Congratulations to Ben Ritchie and Gregory Barrere on a great cooperation in getting this in place, on time and on budget. Really impressive! #naturebasedsolutions #carboncredits #deforestation #VCM https://lnkd.in/dQ78GPbi

Did everyone miss this big event in Earth observation? Planet recently launched its Planet Insights Platform. In my impression, it is by far the best software in the field of #EarthObservation (EO) and will shake up the EO market. But – at least in my bubble – hardly anyone seems to have heard about it yet. *** Some background: Earth Observation (EO) refers to the use of remote sensing technologies to monitor earth data such as changes in land and ecosystems, biodiversity, water bodies, and the atmosphere. This is key for evaluating and validating #sustainability data along supply chains, f.e. in connection with #CSDDD and #EUDR. Handling EO data is not trivial, which is why there are management tools that make it simpler, such as Nala Earth and The Landbanking Group's Landler. Much in the field is free or open source, such as the UNEP/GRID-Geneva or ENCORE. The Planet Insights Platform – at least that's my impression – puts all the puzzle pieces together and could make many of the existing applications obsolete.
