Guiding Lights Every one needs them and for surveyors they come in a multitude of ways and take a number of forms. From the early explorers and their maps and notes to mentoring surveyors and professional bodies the surveyor and the profession has a wealth of experience and encouragement the world over. One of the least expected forms of guidance for the surveyor and possibly least appreciated are the extensive array of guides and regulations that have continually been the framework for the practicing surveyor. Today's surveyor needs to be able to prepare a modern strata plan and understand the most recent changes to strata legislation and understand how to read an original grant in 1790 or a road created under the Road and Streets Act under King William IV. NSW surveyors have a regulatory system called the Surveying and Spatial information Act 2002 (no 83) but the actual functioning of that system is the Survey and Spatial Information Regulations (2017) which is the predominant structure for all things surveying. The first directions to surveyors came from Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1836 but it was not until nearly 100 years later that the first Survey Practice Regulations came out in 1933 with a few more directions coming out periodically until the present day. The purpose of the regulations has evolved over time with the 2017 regulations covering everything from the duties of a registered surveyor to filed notes, boundary marking and instrument and measurement accuracies. Some of the older directions including The Lands Department Directions in 1963 have an extensive resource of useful information for both plan preparation and reading parish plans markings and notations. The 1981 Directions have some very good examples of drafting standards as well as very clear examples of plans suitable for lodgement with the equivalent of Land Registry Services at the time and some information previously contained in the 1963 directions. A thorough understanding of the current survey regulations is required for registration exams. Another very useful resource is the Surveyor Generals Directions which will also be examined upon. The Surveyor General has often published directions for government and private surveyors since about 1866. The current directions consist of thirteen active and inactive directions with 5, 6, 7 and 9 being the most often referred to. SGD no 7 is actually 100 pages of direction examples explaining the application of the Survey and Spatial Regulations and is often overlooked as an extremely valuable resource. Nearly all these resources are available on the web except the 1933 regulations which may be available at NSW State Archives. Marking of the Landscape is an excellent and more detailed history of the various regulations by Ian Marshall and BOSSI.

"The bottom line is that the industry's future is in our hands. We can either sit by and watch it die or we can do something to try to breathe life back into it." An interesting article written by land surveyor, Patrick Champion, sharing his thoughts about the future of the industry. What are your thoughts on how we can work together to improve uptake into the surveying profession? Here's the article link: https://ow.ly/pF6B50SlHVc #surveying #geospatial #stemoutreach

Last week I posted the article "What are Land Surveyors?" I neglected to share the file correctly, so if you missed it, please revisit and the document will open. In that article I outline the many things someone might do as a surveyor. Today's article, "Why Land Surveying as a Career?" I outline many career paths a surveyor might follow. A career in land surveying doesn't have to be a lifetime spent in the woods, although that is not a bad thing and I miss my days as a woodsman! Want to know more about surveying as a career? FWH showcased our Survey Field Crew at the beginning of Surveyor's Week, here is who they are and what they do! FWH is proud to celebrate National Surveyor's Week! This is celebrated annually starting on the third Sunday of March [National Surveyors Week - Land Surveyors United]. This year, it runs from March 17th to March 23rd, 2024. The purpose of Surveyor's Week is to raise public awareness about the importance of the surveying profession [Celebrate National Surveyors Week - NCEES]. Surveyors play a vital role in our society by accurately measuring and mapping the land. • Accurate land development: Surveyors ensure responsible land development by providing precise measurements and data on properties. This includes things like property boundaries, topography (think elevation and features), and potential risks • Smooth construction projects: Land surveyors are involved throughout the construction process. They establish property lines to avoid building on the wrong land, take measurements to ensure structures are built to the right specifications, and can even identify potential challenges like soil stability or flood risks before construction begins. • Legal disputes: Property boundaries can sometimes be unclear or disputed. Surveyors research historical records and use their technical expertise to establish accurate boundaries. • Maps and GIS: Surveyors help create the maps we rely on and contribute to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) used for everything from urban planning to environmental protection. Surveyors provide the essential foundation for much of our built environment. Their work ensures projects are constructed in the right places, legal boundaries are respected, and development is safe and responsible. #SurveyFieldCrew #NationalSurveyorsWeek #FWHassociates #TeamFWH #SurveyorsLife #TeamWork

Happy Global Surveyors Day everyone 😁 This day was created to highlight the indispensable role surveying has played in human civilization's development. Surveying is a well-respected profession which is hugely diverse across a wide range of disciplines from marine and antique surveyors to building, quantity, rural, land surveying and many more. Celebrating Global Surveyors Day is a way to acknowledge the critical work surveyors do in shaping our environment. It's a profession that combines technical expertise, historical knowledge, and a forward-looking perspective to manage and improve the spaces where societies grow and evolve. Whether you are directly involved in the field or simply recognise the impact of surveying on our world, it's a day to appreciate the skill, dedication, and innovation that surveyors bring to their essential work. Surveyors UK is passionate about the surveying profession and believes that it needs to be celebrated, promoted and seen as a career choice for future generations. #WednesdayWisdom “In addition to having great time management skills and physical stamina, the best quality of a successful surveyor is the ability to adapt, be proactive and able to solve problems. You never know quite what you will find in the field – you could have harsh weather, your GPS equipment may not get signal under trees and tall bushes, and vertical slopes will make measuring with your dumpy level difficult, making it essential to understanding slopes and angles. In construction accurate surveying is essential.” Melvin Du Plessis, Surveyor, ASLA #dignitythroughinfrastructure

At AGS we’ve recently been invited to produce a small scale investigation at a beautiful location in Malpas, Cornwall. This small scale investigation allows us to maximise the amount of data we can get, without interfering with the surrounding landscape. This was a tidal effected project, as it lay below the high waterline, so we could only work for a couple of hours over the course of two days, but we made it work to our advantage! It also meant that we couldn’t operate our usual heavy machinery, and so we completed lot of this by hand, creating minimal impact and disruption. The way in which we approached this firstly, was to hand auger through the formation levels in various locations to see what the ground makeup is like, and whether this differs along the coastline. The next step is digging exposure pits on chosen columns to look for any cracking, and if so, explore the depth of concrete that could be effected. We’re also going to be looking at some of the voiding in the back of the wall, and that will be done by hand techniques to keep cost and time scales down and maximise what we can get for the client on their budget. After a small scale investigation for yourself, or simply want to talk through a project? Enquire with us now! #AGS #AGSGroundSolutions #Phaseonereport #buildingconstruction #construction #cornishbusiness #engineeringcorrnwall #geotechnical #geotechnics
