What landowners should be doing at the time of transfer is establishing their tax basis in the timber separate and apart from the land, and if they have not done so, they should be holding the timber for at least a year to qualify the timber sale proceeds for capital gains. And with hardwoods any sale they conduct early in their tenure should be a Timber Stand Improvement. As Willy Wonka may have paraphrased those cited Proverbs "Don't get over excited. Don't lose your head, Augustus..."
