Getting into a blue collar skilled trade... As an apprentice, laborer, groundman... There a few important things to skills/traits to develop that will help you through out your entire career. One of these things is learning to take ownership/accountability for your mistakes and screw ups. We all make mistakes...but the important thing to do is to own up to those mistakes. Two teenagers have secured jobs in the construction industry thanks to a new partnership between Vistry Group and North Kent College! Frankie and Heath have landed positions as apprentice bricklayers just two months after Vistry Kent launched the initiative – which helps students on construction-based courses at the college take part in work experience with contractors at its Ashmere site in #EbbsfleetGardenCity, then apply for jobs directly. They’re now working for Flahive Brickwork as apprentice bricklayers on a two-year NVQ course which started in August. Lara Pool, Inclusive Growth Manager at #EbbsfleetDevelopmentCorporation, met with Frankie and Heath, along with the Vistry Group team, to see how they were getting on. 'We're pleased to have facilitated and supported this initiative which helps demonstrate to students at the college that there can be a clear pathway into employment in the local construction industry and provide jobs for young people in the area.' Careers earning up to $175,000/year with no college degree requirement. In America, a college education is often seen as the standard path to the middle class. However, trades and apprenticeship programs offer lucrative opportunities, with some roles paying more than many college graduates make. Careers like HVAC Maintenance and Repair, Electrician, Mechanic, Plumber, Elevator Technician, Dental Hygienist, and more provide on-the-job learning experiences and financial stability without the burden of student debt. We caught up with Amanda (Planet 1st year apprentice) on site last week to get her insight and feedback on recently joining the construction industry. Here’s what she had to say... Q: What was your inspiration to join the construction industry and become a plumber? A: I was inspired to join the construction industry as a plumber because my dad, brother and partner are plumbers and mum is a sales rep in the plumbing industry. I was also curious as to how construction works. Q: Is the Sydney Fish Market site what you thought it would be? A: I didn’t know what to expect because it is the first construction site I have been on, but I find it really cool how we are working under the sea level and seeing the wall holding the water back every day is pretty awesome. Q: What’s the best thing about working at Planet? A: The people along with the opportunities to learn and widen my knowledge within the industry, especially while being on this site surrounded by very skilled tradies. Q: When do you commence at the PICAC Glenwood training facility? A: I begin training at PICAC in April. Q: Any message for other young people who are thinking about getting into Plumbing? A: For any young men and or women thinking about getting into plumbing I would highly recommended it, there is so much to learn and so many opportunities. Today marks the start of National Careers Week and to celebrate, we are shining a spotlight on the wide range of careers available in the construction industry. Name: Daniella George Role: Plumber   Project: Sydney Children’s Hospital – Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre at Randwick. What do you love about working in the construction industry?   - No two days are the same which provides great mental stimulation.   - The work we do requires problem solving skills which challenges me.   - You learn leadership responsibilities and skills.  - Great pay and benefits. Can you tell us a little bit about what your role entails?  Normal plumbing duties including the installation of pipes for hot and cold water, tapping into the mains water supply, ventilation for the building, connections for the thermos-mixing valves, installation of fixture such as toilets and sinks and sensor technology. How did you get your start in the construction industry?   My dad was a concreter and I started labouring with him from a young age. I fell in love with the industry and opportunities continued to present themselves which is how I ended up doing my apprenticeship in plumbing. Now I am a fully qualified plumber for Central Plumbing. What is your advice to women thinking of joining the industry?  Don’t think, just do it.
