The CARMINE Project is built on 8 dynamic Work Packages designed to drive climate resilience in European metropolitan regions. 🌟 Work Package 3: We're diving deep into socio-economic vulnerabilities to climate change by assessing local physical, economic, social, and ecosystem stressors. This WP establishes baseline risk scenarios and conducts cost-benefit analyses of various adaptation measures, including Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) developed in WP1. 🎉 Excited to share my latest academic contributions on floating kelp dynamics and their ecological importance! 📄 In our first paper, “Numerical experiments investigating the influence of drag on trajectory patterns of floating macroalgae,” we introduced a new model that simulates the effects of hydrodynamic and wind drag on solitary floating kelp, as opposed to kelp rafts. Our paper underscores the critical role of drag forces—both hydrodynamic and wind—in shaping the dispersal and accumulation patterns of floating kelp. 🌊 📄 Building on this work, our second paper, “Individual-based numerical experiment to describe the distribution of floating kelp within the Southern Benguela Upwelling System,” applies these concepts to a real-world context. We employed an individual-based approach to model kelp trajectories, accounting for site-specific morphological traits such as buoyancy, sinking rates, and drag. Through extensive simulations, we were able to map the spatial distribution of floating kelp, revealing how oceanographic features, particularly mesoscale features, influence its accumulation and sinking. This study enhances our understanding of kelp’s role in ocean ecosystems.
