𝗕𝘆𝘁𝗲-𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 In our efforts to help others, we often walk a fine line between generosity and creating dependency. As Bob Lupton eloquently explains in his book Toxic Charity, “Giving to those in need what they could be gaining from their own initiative may well be the kindest way to destroy people.” When we give once, we inspire gratitude. When we give repeatedly, we foster expectation. But when we stop giving, we risk breeding resentment and dependency. Bob Lupton provides a roadmap to dependency that we need to watch out for: * Give once and you elicit appreciation. * Give twice and you create anticipation. * Give three times and you create expectation. * Give four times and it becomes entitlement. * Give five times and you establish dependency. So, how can we help without creating dependency? The key lies in empowerment. Instead of providing continuous aid, we should focus on enabling individuals and communities to become self-sufficient. This means investing in education, skills training, and opportunities that allow people to take control of their own futures. By shifting our approach from charity to empowerment, we can create lasting change and build stronger, more resilient communities. Let’s strive to make a difference that empowers rather than entangles. What is your view on giving? A good example of corporate giving to community from NZ Post. On a quick skim features that are worth noting are that their Delivering for Good programme is: - aligned with the organisation's core work - so it makes sense - a reliable offering - it's been around for a while so they're staying the course - generous and rewarding for the participating charities. They've given all 13 finalists a year's worth of free courier services with the winner (based on your vote) a second year. It takes resource for charities to enter opportunities like this, so it's good to see more than one charity reaping benefits. - their storytelling about the causes is also valuable for the community groups' public profile. I loved reading the infomation on the charities. They've got a good mix of big, medium and small. 91 per cent of the estimated $3.6b a year donated to charities (thank you JBWere New Zealand for this stat) goes to just 9 per cent of charities - the big ones with massive public profile. Therefore it's great that organisations like NZ Post use their platforms to publicise smaller ones. It was hard to choose who to vote for but I selected Live for More, which I'd never heard of before. Because I'm a real charity geek I also looked at their information on the Charities Register, where community groups annually lodge their financial statements etc. Live for More say "We’re proud of our impact with the high-risk young men that are participating in our surf therapy programmes. We support them into full time work, education, or just becoming free from unproductive lifestyles. "The flow-on impact includes becoming a more active and engaged member of their whānau (family) whilst providing a legal stable income. "This in turn will impact the wider community, as these young men improve their prosocial behaviours, they become less reliant on social welfare and break the generational links to crime, gangs and unhealthy lifestyles." Fellow charity supporters, check out the finalists via the link below and vote. Nice work Dawn Baggaley and the team. Respite is a statutory right for those who need it, but drastic cuts to local authority funding meanthat many unpaid carers are not getting any breaks. At all. Over 60% of unpaid carers have not had a break in the past year. Over 25% have never had a break. Access ot respite is a statutory right for those who need it, but many are being denied help. This Revitalise Respite Holidays give carers the break they need. @Revitalise Respite Holidays #GiveMeABreak https://lnkd.in/eBGhtQFc

This week is Road Safety Week. Organised by Brake, the road safety charity, this campaign is a vital reminder of the life-changing impact road and traffic related incidents can have on individuals, families, and communities. Hounslow Highways is committed to community safety by raising awareness and participating in Road Safety Week. This nationwide campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of safe driving, cycling, and walking practices while encouraging communities to take collective action to prevent road accidents. Brakes’ statistics show that every year, more than 1,700 people die on UK roads and another 30,000 receive serious, life-changing injuries. The numbers are just shocking. Through managing and maintaining the borough's public roads and footpaths, Hounslow Highways will continue with its’ ongoing efforts to improve road conditions and implement safety measures. Working with the Council, we will continue to focus on creating a safer borough through: Maintaining the public roads and footpaths 🛣️ Provide good, reliable lighting 💡 Winter maintenance ❄️ Carrying out site safety inspections to pick up and repair defects on the public roads and footpaths. 🚧 Road safety is at the heart of what we do every day. Road Safety Week allows us to collaborate with our community to ensure Hounslow’s roads are safe for everyone. #HounslowHighways #Roadsafetyweek #Drivesafe #Roadsafety

This week is #RoadSafetyWeek, a national initiative from @Brake, the road safety charity. This year's aim is to raise awareness about the devastating toll of road crashes, and celebrate the work of the incredible people who support families after a road death or serious injury. Did you know that a high rate of fatal accidents take place on rural roads, despite drivers rarely exceeding these roads’ legal speed limit? While it is important to enforce, low instances of speeding amongst a fleet is not always a sure-fire indicator of safe driving. That is why we developed a database called SafeSpeed. Our software analyses a staggering 30 million data points from Quartix-tracked vehicles every day, and then matches this speed data with UK road segments. From this we can calculate the speed most road users are actually travelling on each road segment and use this as a speed safety benchmark. If you want to learn about how we can support your fleet of vehicles, no matter the size, click here to learn more and get a free quote - https://lnkd.in/eqdCmzDy #RoadSafetyWeek #Quartix #Fleetmanagement #roadsafety #fleetsafety

Exciting News! We are thrilled to announce that Liberty has been chosen as the washroom and laundry partner for NGB Clean, a remarkable Social Enterprise cleaning company linked to the No Going Back charity . This amazing charity works with former offenders by reintegrating into the workplace and aims to prevent reoffending. Importantly, all profits go directly to the No Going Back charity.
