As the public address announcer and online scorekeeper for Renfrew's two junior hockey teams, I work in a wheelchair-accessible, glassed-in area known as the "bubble", above the north end of the ice in the myFM Centre's Deslaurier Arena. The regular "press box", aka the Peter Clark Gondola, is not wheelchair-accessible, plus there's really only enough room for the broadcast commentators, the DJ, and maybe one or two others. In previous seasons, I worked from a table in the open, at the south end of the stands, with both of my laptops running on batteries, and my hands getting very cold sometimes. While it's unfortunate that the full-time wheelchair user who often watched games from here has passed on, the bubble is a more comfortable spot, plus I have plug-in power up here, and each team's GM will usually join me for the duration of each game. A bonus is that I don't have spectators in the way or distracting me; some of the scratched and/or injured players for the home teams may join me in here, if they're not subbing for my wife on DJ duty, but they're usually well-behaved. The laptop on the left of this photo is for web browsing and for my scripts; I have a general game script, and a separate Google Doc for sponsor mentions, and I try to keep my use of paper to a minimum. The laptop on the right runs the HockeyTech LeagueStat system, which I use for generating a live gamesheet, i.e. keeping time, logging goals and penalties as they happen, and adding other pertinent information - all of this info appears on the Central Canada Hockey League (Junior A) and Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League (Junior B) websites. I use a wireless mic for PA duty, and the two-way radio at the bottom-right is used to communicate with ice-level personnel; the timekeeper or his assistant will call up goal and penalty info as soon as the referees bring it to them. Win or lose, it's fun volunteering for the local junior hockey teams, as well as billeting a player.

🔴Do Arsenal have what it takes to become champions? Before tonight’s huge encounter, and more on the league… I wrote about the significance of winning on Saturday, the importance of facing adversity, and the different title race narratives. This is my first article in 8 months or so, and it’s something I enjoy. So, would like to get back to doing them a bit more regularly. Especially, as I look to see what exactly I enjoyed doing the most going forward. Went with a different writing style here too, one with more of a story element. ✍️ Check it out below on my WordPress site! 👇 #AFC

Dude Perfect vs. MLB Pitcher A masterclass in story. https://lnkd.in/geGFBJiW A recent prompt on a quest to become a top voice in copywriting (a lofty goal to be sure), asked "How can storytelling help in copywriting?". My answer was perfect, witty, and befitting all the awards. Obviously. But whatever I said, is better illustrated in this Dude Perfect video. These guys are incredible storytellers. And it helps they went to A&M (shoutout TAMU and Gunnar Rogers) Because honestly, what they do isn't all that mind-blowing. They set up trick shots, and repeat the shot until they make it. I'm sure we've all seen people on social media trying to hit a hole-in-one or drop a pen into a thimble or some such. Eventually they make it. The magic is in the edit. In this video, which I encourage you to watch, they hit every single storytelling beat you need to enhance any kind of branded content, copy, or other piece of advertising/ marketing. It starts with a challenge - can a regular guy get a hit off of a MLB pitcher? Ooooh, I'm intrigued. We click. But we aren't going to get the answer right away, no. Instead, we're gonna get build up, stakes, and little micro challenges that carry us through to the ultimate payoff. If they had cut directly to the showdown, the video would've been maybe 2 minutes long, and ultimately not very satisfying. The Dudes know what they're doing. We get to see our challenger go through the climb of getting hits off of little league, high-school, and college pitchers, all the while starting to question his abilities. These challenges give us the opportunity to learn more about him, why this is so important, and start to root for an unlikely hero. By the time we get to the Rangers training camp, we're invested in this. Who cares if this is 10 minutes or 10 hours, we NEED to know what happens. Every minute or so we get little rewards. Boom, he hits off of the college pitcher. Bam, the other Dudes are trying (and failing) to steal bases from pro catchers. And it's enough build up and doubt to create stakes. Those all important stakes that make us afraid of a loss. Then, and this is GENIUS, the rules get changed. Our hero thought he had 3 whole at-bats to get his hit. He only has 2. The pressure is on, and everyone is beginning to doubt the outcome... Closeup on his face, reverse shot on the pitcher, all our butts are clenched tighter than a baseball's stitches. WHACK! A bloop past second and he's got his hit. Over ten minutes have passed and the Perfect Dudes have collected 10x revenue from youtube for the longer watchtimes. Storytelling at it's finest. Challenge/ Problem Stakes Struggle Doubt Payoff A satisfying end to our story. In your branding and your copy, always remember it's the power of story that draws our viewers through to the end. And we want them to leave satisfied. Thanks Dudes. Stay Perfect.

I’ll admit I’m a little surprised the number is quite this high (maybe a little selection bias in polling?), but the trend is undeniable… Athletes are increasingly understanding that the same tools that were mostly used to evaluate them in the past are now being utilized to prepare and develop them. We talk often at Teamworks about Pro baseball being the tip of the spear in sports from a systems and analysis perspective. That’s why the Zelus Analytics acquisition is so important as we continue to seek best-in-class solutions for elite athletes across all sports. Because what we see in practice is that it’s rarely the raw data that is impactful - it’s the analysis and delivery of the insights that transform performance.
What do MLB players think when it comes to the use of #analytics in the game? Has it helped them or hurt them? Overwhelmingly, the players think that the use of analytics has helped their career. Makes you think! #analytics #baseball #mlb #theathletic #writing #datadriven
