Such a great blog on how to be neuro-affirming.
I especially liked GROVE’s Neuro-affirming Foundations:
-Our approaches are grounded in the principles of Neurodiversity Paradigm.
-We recognise the pervasive role of ableism within society, including the influence of internalised ableism. We aim to challenge ableist narratives about neurodivergent people.
-We are committed to being anti-racist.
-We are committed to being LGBTQIA+ affirming.
-We recognise and respect each individual’s intersectional identity and are committed to unpacking one’s own privilege.
-We aspire to work in a way that is trauma informed.
-We respect all forms of communication and presume competence.
You will have heard me refer to neuro-affirming or neuro-difference affirming language. In this blog for Jess Garner GROVE website Helen Autistic Realms has beautifully summarised and encapsulated what this means in more detail and why it is important.

In a world where behavior is often hastily labeled as rude or disrespectful, it is crucial to delve deeper into the underlying reasons that drive such actions, especially in children. This poem serves as a gentle reminder that what may appear as insolence is frequently a manifestation of a child's emotional struggles, often rooted in past traumas or adverse experiences. Children, much like adults, carry the weight of their histories, and for some, this weight influences how they interact with their peers and adults. When a child exhibits anger, withdrawal, or hostility, it is vital to recognise that these responses may not be acts of rebellion but rather cries for understanding and compassion.
The complexities of attachment and emotional development illustrate that behaviors interpreted as rudeness are frequently defense mechanisms—a way for children to shield themselves from further pain or rejection. Adverse childhood experiences can distort a child's perception of themselves and their relationships, leading them to feel unworthy of kindness or support. This poem seeks to bridge the gap between perception and reality, inviting adults to listen more closely to the messages hidden beneath a child's abrasive exterior. By fostering empathy and patience, we can create an environment where children feel safe to express their vulnerabilities rather than resorting to defensive behaviours.
Ultimately, understanding that these children are communicating their pain opens the door to healing and connection. Rather than meeting rudeness with punishment or frustration, we can respond with kindness and curiosity, striving to uncover the stories that lie behind our actions. This shift in perspective not only aids in the well-being of the child but also fosters healthier relationships and communities. The poem becomes a vital tool in nurturing empathy, encouraging both adults and children alike to look beyond surface behaviours and recognise the struggles that may be concealed within. Through this understanding, we can cultivate a more compassionate world, one where every child feels seen, heard, and valued.
