Two new reports have been released stating the value of reconductoring and outlining the advanced conductor technology options that can get us on track for net zero. 2035 and Beyond: Reconductoring with Advanced Conductors Can Accelerate the Transmission Expansion Required for a Clean Grid And a companion report: Supporting Advanced Conductor Deployment: Barriers and Policy Solutions These reports solidify the value of advanced reconductoring of our transmission system in the United States. “Reconductoring transmission lines could add about 64 TW-miles of new interzonal transmission capacity by 2035 compared to about 16 TW-miles from only building new transmission lines, the report from the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley and GridLab said.” With climate change increasing the severity and frequency of extreme weather events, we have no time to waste modernizing the grid with more resilient technology. We also need to act quickly to add renewable resources that are currently sitting in interconnection queues to help mitigate future climate impacts. “The additional transmission capacity from reconductoring would allow the United States to get 90% of its electricity from emissions-free power sources by 2035, according to the report.” Utilities and their customers will unlock cost savings by adopting this approach, meanwhile addressing the rising electricity demand brought on by the electrification of our everyday technologies. They include “virtual power plants” — when technologies such as home batteries, rooftop solar systems, smart water heaters and thermostats are linked together and managed via software to provide the same services as a conventional power plant. Utilities in Vermont, Colorado and Massachusetts are already using them, to quickly respond to rising demand at a much lower cost than operating natural gas combustion turbines. According to one estimate, virtual power plants could lower U.S. utilities’ costs by as much as $35 billion over the next decade. Utilities could also accelerate efforts to replace outdated transmission lines with newer ones that can carry double theelectric current and to bring more battery storage online. They can compensate customers for using less energy during times when demand is high and invest far more in energy efficiency, helping customers to adopt devices that use less electricity. All of these solutions would #save customers #money and #reduce carbon #emissions. All eyes are on this powerfully effective strategy for advancing grid technology and performance fast and affordably. “By using reconductoring, the project was approved in 30 days and completed in eight weeks, doubling the existing transmission lines’ capacity, and avoiding a major permitting effort that could have delayed the project or added extra costs.” Advanced reconductoring allows grid operators and utilities to fast track the integration of new clean generation, avoiding years of waiting. “But advanced reconductoring’s short-term benefits are far too large to ignore.
