Recently, a closing seminar was held for the LIVESTOCK project, focusing on the role of livestock in future food production. The seminar began with an inspiring lecture by Professor Imke de Boer from Wageningen University & Research, titled "Rerooting the Dutch Food System," highlighting the challenges in the food system. 🚜 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: Project leader Hanne Fjerdingby Olsen from NMBU presented the overall project idea of a circular livestock system, emphasizing the increased utilization of Norwegian resources. ♻️ 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: NORSUS researchers Stine Samsonstuen and Hanne Møller presented exciting case studies on pigs and cattle, focusing on environmental and social sustainability. Ivar Pettersen (formerly NIBIO) introduced economic measures in food production, while Kari-Anne Lyng (NORSUS) concluded with a comprehensive sustainability assessment of livestock production and the need to implement measures to achieve circular livestock production. Empowering Resilience: IGAD’s Strategy for Sustainable and Resilient Livestock Development Amidst Climate Change The agricultural economy of the #IGAD region, with livestock contributing an estimated 57% to the Agricultural Gross Domestic Product (AGDP), is crucial to its Member States. Recognising the sector's pivotal role, especially in areas rich in large and small ruminants like cattle, camels, sheep, and goats, IGAD has crafted a robust strategy to safeguard and enhance this vital industry. The Strategy for Sustainable and Resilient Livestock Development is a forward-looking plan aimed at fortifying the livestock sector against the impacts of climate change while fostering growth and sustainable development across the region’s diverse landscapes, particularly in the arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) where agro-pastoral and pastoral systems dominate.
