New initiative to help people with psychiatric problems participate in society: 6 out of the 35 apartments would be rented to tenants who are willing and able to spend 8 hours a week to socialize with their neighbors with psychiatric problems. Nice initiative, for the former patients. The catch is: the market-conform rent for a two-occupant apartment is set at €1475, excluding service charge of €75. To make this work, the potential tenants need to be able to be firm with the other neighbors. Because, it would require you to do more than just invite them over for coffee. This is emotional labor. The lowest pay for a #psychiatric counsellor is €10 an hour. That means, the tenant would have to "pay" an extra €80 a week in the form of emotional labor. So, in reality, the tenant would be paying €320 on top of the €1475, which is €1795 per month. And you need to be able to turn your neighors away and guard your boundaries, say if they come knocking every day and refuse to leave after you let them in. I have mixed feelings about such a project. Very ambitious, I'd say. However, is it fair to expect a rent of almost €1800?! €400 to €500 would be a fairer deal, since the apartments are new and near the city center. #woningnood #housingshortage #emotionallabor is labor!

After having lived experience of mental health challenges and having to work with psychiatrists in appointments or some members of a clinical team the top two statements really resonates with me. Some psychiatrists I met had these, others didn’t want to build a relationship or listen to me, my body and how it was responding to treatment. They solely saw me as uneducated in the field of knowing what’s best for me due to my diagnosis that they labeled on me. I know now I was always the number 1 expert on my recovery journey and it couldn’t be heard for some weren’t ready to learn and listen. Instead refer to their medical jargon and soley look through the medical model and apply that soloed to their practice. But they are missing the crucial point of understanding what it means to be fully human. How many others have experienced this treatment approach. Maybe they need to add into their studies many placements on learning how to interact with others, how to build relationships and how to understand how the mind, emotions and body are always interacting or disconnecting and what works for one person doesn’t work for others, and finally learn to listen to their clients without making judgments of clinical diagnosis and identifying the person as solely their diagnosis. I know me better than anybody else and I’ll create my own label. Because I am the expert in my understanding how my life experiences, relationships, trauma, abusers and my body, thoughts, feelings-emotions have and do affect me. I have now since being in the mental health sector and my own personal experience seek to see changes. For the stories I hear from others is similar to mine. Sanctuary and medical abuse needs to stop and the only way that can happen is if we stand up and allow our voices to be heard. Even if it starts out only being one person. That person can make the world of difference when you feel all alone in a clinical environment. So now to feel more empowered I can say that: “My name is Kylie and I have survivor syndrome “ Be proud to shout it out loud. For the world of clinicians needs to hear your voice ❤️🩹💕

Psychiatric care should be lifting, inspiring, and joyful. Instead, most psychiatrists fixate on diagnosis, making little effort to develop a relationship. They spend more time power-playing to establish themselves as the expert in the room instead of celebrating the person seeking care as the star of the show. How on earth can this traditional approach be healing? Guess what, it isn't. Welcome to Rupi Legha, MD, an approach that shakes up traditional psychiatric care! I spent years undoing the training that conditioned me to be an automaton, rather than a human being, flaws, triumphs, and all. My care is relationship-centered, collaborative, personalized, and joyful. It's as bright and in living color as my fashion, and I promise you we will smile and laugh together as a celebration of our shared humanity. I provide holistic, compassionate care in California, New York, New Jersey, and Colorado to children and adults of all ages. I rarely screen people out of my care and do not make people wait weeks or months to see me. I do my best to bring people in with a warm welcome--and to do so as quickly as possible. Come see me! #funpsychiatrist #happypsychiatrist #mentalhealth #psychiatry #fashionistamd #antiracistmd
