As a freelancer in any industry you must believe your voice is unique. In a digital workplace packed with competition making the most noise rarely guarantees success. For me it comes down to self-belief, a clarity of vision, and relentless consistency. Create your own opportunities by all means, and reach out to people of interest or importance, but be firm in the belief that you have some special to offer - because you do. This is no pep talk or wake-up call for those who have already learned these lessons. It is just a little reminder that if you turn up every day and hit your deadlines, self-imposed or otherwise, people will pay attention. Half the time, opportunities come from left field and involve connections you never knew were watching anyway. A stark reminder if ever there was one, that dropping the ball is never an option. Be passionate, be productive, and pay attention - because something exciting is always around the corner. On my slate this week is some copy for CBR on The Old Man Season 2, currently streaming on Hulu stateside, plus an interesting indie film release. The London Film Festival is also coming round so preparations are in hand for that, not to mention a little theatrical opportunity courtesy of The National Theatre. War Horse is coming to Southampton and press night is on the 8th. As usual, there are video reviews to enjoy with talking heads on Apple's Oscar-winning Coda, Paramount's Apartment 7A, and Jodie Comer in Prima Facie courtesy of NTLive. Freelancers are warriors. Well, they used to be. The concept started in medieval times. Mercenary knights had no loyalty to any one lord. Instead, they offered their fighting skills to the highest bidder. The term first appeared in Sir Walter Scott’s 1820 novel, Ivanhoe. "Free" meant they were free to work for anyone. The "lance" part was the knight's weapon. In the story, a "free-lance" was a knight who was independent. The video below (suggested to me by YouTube) is a comedy short film about the journey knight working for a king. The funny part? A lovely bts pic I was sent from last week's shoot. I remember this moment. It was at the end of the day, I was so sweaty (no a/c while filming) and while it might appear like I'm checking email or even scrolling TikTok, I was actually writing some Voiceover copy to support a scene we'd just shot that was really hard to articulate while acting out the motions. I've said it before, but going above and beyond for your producer, your cast and crew, or your client, and bringing ALL your skills to the table, especially the ones that are a no-brainer, like me writing copy for VO, just levels up the entire experience for everyone! When you're prepared, you film faster. When you provide helpful direction, the scene goes smoother. And when you voluntarily take one thing off the director's plate, well, it not only makes a positive impression, but it just feels good to help out. As freelance creatives, we are the CEOs of our business, and providing the best customer service we can, without being taken advantage of, is paramount. Why I feel I have an advantage as a freelancer- Short answer- I choose to be passionate about the projects I do. Long answer- - I can choose my projects - I can choose the people I work with(Other freelancers/production houses/agencies) - I can flexibly price myself. All of this helps me stay passionate in every project I do and inevitably so, makes for a good output. Resulting in recurring happy clients and crew members who reap the benefits of being a freelancer like me. P.S. The day I finished making my first high-production quality short-film; everything changed... In film school, our senior thesis project was to write a short film script. The top four would each receive a ~$50k budget to produce. I put everything into my script. But it ended up not getting selected. That stung. After freelancing for a couple years post-film school; I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had unfinished business. So, at 23, I decided to bet on myself. I wasn’t going to wait for someone else’s approval to realize my vision. I was ambitious. Perhaps too ambitious. I went way over budget and scope. I spent over a year working on it during my 'free time' outside of my freelance work. It was grueling. But I had some amazing support from close friends on my team. Was the film perfect? Hell no. I’m my own worst critic 😆 But the end result was still pretty cool. The film premiered at the Grauman’s Chinese Theater, and although it never received the recognition I had hoped for, Creating it gave me a lot more confidence that I had the skills and drive to deliver on really difficult projects. That shift in mindset helped me start and run my own creative media agency. Before I knew it, I was working on commercial projects with renowned brands; traveling all over for a number of productions. So, if you ever doubt that the projects of your dreams exist? Even if they don’t turn out how you thought they would… They’re out there and you’ll never know what'll happen until you go for it. P.S. - Greetings one and all on this rainy day, when once again the great British weather delivers another deluge! - On the freelancing front things have taken a distinctly interesting turn. Commissions for copy from indie film makers have combined with additional interest from a larger on-line presence in the entertainment arena. - Reviews either on-line or in the works include Late Night with the Devil (on general release), Renegade Nell (on Disney+), Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces (Apple Studios) and Ripley (on Netflix soon). Throw into the mix some imminent CBR contributions and things are on the up! - Video reviews are also in the bag for the Steve Martin doc, Renegade Nell and a look back at Lockwood and Co on Netflix. Popular YouTube entries include my thoughts on The Regime (HBO), Vanya (NTLive) and the aforementioned Late Night with the Devil! - In coming copy on Love Lies Bleeding will hit at the end of April along with a video, plus my thoughts on Franklin and Ripley for CBR, plus retro reviews for Ridley' Scott's Legend and Tom Holland's Spiderman trilogy. Plus a few more commissions that have come through from indie creators in need of some dynamic copy from yours truly! - As you can see my plate is quite full, but this is no accident since I remain consistent, hit my deadlines, and do my best. I care passionately and own my failures, and there have been one or two which still sting. However, we are all human, we all make mistakes and people are quick to undermine so best be your own fan club! - As ever my DMs remain open for freelance opportunities from filmmakers, producers and PRs in need of some solid review copy. I haven’t updated my current job on my LinkedIn since I end my last full-time game dev job last year… why? The short answer is that after months of looking, the opportunities I found on LinkedIn were far between. So what’s put food on the table? What’s kept me busy? I found passion in survival jobs working with kids as a performer and substitute teacher. It makes me happy, and it keeps me busy while paying for food. But that doesn’t mean I’m not in entertainment. It doesn’t keep me from creating short films, getting on set, or picking up freelance. If anything, this past year I’ve gotten more done than the year before it working just one full-time job. - I’ve written two features (one of which is a musical) and multiple shorts. - Directed/wrote a short film and am applying for festivals. - Acted in short films. - Got on set for an entire feature. - Taken on freelance VFX and cinematic work with a few consistent clients - Gained a consistent voice over gig while auditioning for more. - Released an album with my band Riot Knight on all major platforms and have performed live at buckets list Los Angeles venues such as The Viper Room. Your professional life as a creative doesn’t have live on one platform. Just because you haven’t posted doesn’t mean you’re not making progress. I’ve found a way to make rent and didn’t give up. You can all do it. It takes patience and perseverance. I believe in all entertainers, cause we’re built strong.
