There were really many failures and struggles, and this journey will most likely be uneasy also in the future. But I genuinely believe it is worth it: I wish we could bring a message about the reality people live in, all over the world.
I will probably always remember watching these events. Whether it was the Ukrainian Maidan and later events in Crimea or Donbas, when refugees from the Middle East were crossing the Balkan or later got blocked on the Belarus-Polish borders, the capturing of Aleppo, the fall of Kabul, suppressed protests in Belarus or Russia, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine or the current retaliatory operation in Gaza. They always caught me somewhat personally, although I was in most cases quite far from them, sitting in the cosy and safe Central Europe. But I think I always had this feeling: even though we could watch it all live, be “almost” there and see it at first hand, as well as learn about various details, listen to stories of these people or receive analyses and explanations of the events from various experts, these were always only fragments of the reality. Specific pieces of the whole mosaic - reality, in which these people had to live, struggle with or try to escape. And thus we could not fully understand their lives and share the perspectives from which they see the world. Of course, one can never really gain such understanding until we share the same bodies, live in the same situations, or at least hold the same passports. But I believe, that if there was a chance to see the whole story of the countries, the broad picture including various invisible daily life conditions, which other people, living in other countries, can hardly even envision, and a chance to see how life in a single country is connected with the rest of the world, we could better understand these people, more closely experience their lives and reflect ourselves. At least before we make unfair judgements, fabricate various narratives, simply ignore, refuse our own responsibility, select our heroes and enemies, or make political decisions. Moreover, I believe, it could contribute to creating more space for mutual empathy and solidarity, across the globe.
This is why we are developing this encyclopedia. As a dream of a digital place, from which one could receive such a complete message about the reality in individual countries, as well as about the global reality of our connected world.
We are still only at the beginning. And can hardly fulfil such a mission alone, with a small nonprofit encyclopedia (and seeking sustainable funding has been somewhat super uneasy for us). But I believe, that if more people, organisations, universities and media join this collaborative initiative, it might happen. Once, in the future, but it seems not impossible!
And so, here I am inviting you: join our membership community and help us deliver this message! 🙂The link is in the comments too.
Thanks to the global media environment, we currently have access to knowledge about almost any issue worldwide at our fingertips. The journalistic media provide news, stories, expert analyses, and explainers, and Wikipedia offers a user-friendly introduction to nearly any topic. All of this, supported by citizen journalism via social media, and we can directly witness global events.
However, despite this scope, there is a lack of media outlets that bring all the information together so that anyone anywhere can easily develop a comprehensive understanding of the situation around the world.
We believe that if everyone had access to a precise picture of the broad socio-political situation today, it could help make the world a more humane place.
Therefore, we are developing a new map-based encyclopedia from which anyone can reflect upon the broad social and political situation in today's world from a bird's-eye perspective, with systematic and in-depth content created by specialists invited from around the globe.
This community-funded, nonprofit initiative aims to bridge the knowledge gap. Join our membership community and help us build this new encyclopedia. Follow us for updates on our progress. 💪🏻
