It’s Global Recycling Day – a perfect date to introduce our latest video featuring our recycling partner Martogg & Company. Martogg have been manufacturing recycled plastics since 1975 and have been one of our recycling partners since January 2023. When limits on offshore exports of recycled PET came into place in 2018, Martogg seized the opportunity to invest locally and recognise the potential of Australian recycling resources. Using PET containers from Containers for Change, Martogg make high-grade purified PET flake that can be used to make food safe products such as more bottles and packaging like peanut butter jars and food trays. The latest report on PET recycling in Europe highlights significant advancements in the PET recycling value chain. ♻️ The beverage sector is the central driving force in the continued development of PET recycling, with beverage bottles making up the vast majority of collected and recycled PET (rPET) in Europe. The new ICIS report estimates that three quarters of beverage bottles were collected for recycling in 2022, up from 64% in 2020, the previous period analysed. The figures in the report indicate that 39% of the rPET generated was utilised in new beverage bottles, which themselves have reached 24% rPET content on average, an increase of 7 percentage points in 2020. 🔄️ The increase in bottle-to-bottle recycling is an important step towards reaching ambitious recycled content targets laid down in the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). However, while progress has been made through collaborative efforts, regional disparities in collection and recycling rates persist which must be addressed. In that context, the PPWR proposal’s ambition to mandate the roll-out of Deposit and Return Systems (DRS) across Europe is a positive step. Recycling PETs at the workplace is an important initiative to protect the environment. Although initially viewed with disbelief, PET recycling through the RetuRO system exceeded 50% in June . This is a significant increase, considering that until March, less than 10% of the packaging sold was being recycled. Thus, approximately 23,000 tons of plastic, metal and glass no longer pollute the environment. Many people contribute to this growth by constantly collecting recyclable packaging, and for some, this is even a source of income1. If you have access to recycling machines at your workplace, you can collect PETs and deposit them there. 📢 Average EU PET beverage bottles’ recycled content rate reached 24%, yet more work is needed to achieve the 2025 EU targets.   “2022 was an unprecedented year for the PET and rPET value chains, as shown in the latest report. Despite extreme uncertainty, figures show advancement in the market. However, the disparities in the collection, sorting and recycling of PET around Europe will need to be addressed to achieve the EU recycling targets in the mid and long-term. PET collection and recycling accelerated in 2022 ahead of the new EU Single-Use Plastic Directive targets. The collection rate of PET in 2022 was 60%, showing an increase from the 45% achieved in 2020. Stephan Krueger raises a valid concern: with low virgin #PET prices, the demand for recycled PET (#rPET) risks stagnation despite 2025 targets. I think the same goes for more of the recyclable plastic fractions. Mikko Koivuniemi is right—this is the moment for the beverage industry to lead. Prioritize action now! 🎯 Using recycled content isn't just regulatory—it’s about securing a sustainable future and avoiding long-term risks. Short-term reliance on cheap virgin materials undermines sustainability claims and will cost more later as recycled material becomes scarce. ALPLA AND TÖNISSTEINER REALISE REUSABLE PET BOTTLE MADE ENTIRELY OF RECYCLED MATERIAL The packaging and recycling specialist ALPLA and the mineral water company Privatbrunnen TÖNISSTEINER Sprudel have developed a reusable PET bottle made entirely of recycled material.

PET recyclers in difficulties, situation explained. Few years ago, several major PET bottle users made pledges to increase use of recycled materials and promote sustainable solutions. Now these promises are failing. Explanation is simple and it's money. Global PET packaging production capacity is around 36 M tonnes but market need is only 27 M tonnes or so. Fair to note that this comparison is very difficult to make because there is so much variation in estimates depending from the source. This in most likely because of textile industry is also using lot of PET. However, it's clear that overcapacity exists, and the result is that market price of virgin PET packaging is 1100 €/ton and rPET is 1550 e/ton. (source PIE). One 0,33 l deposit bottle weight is 16g. So with one bottle a company saves 0,72 cents when discarding rPET. I just wish that big bottle users would use at least some of the savings to promote waste management and recycling. Also, there is an urgent need for anti-dumping measures to protect EU recycling capacity - not only for PET but other recycled materials also. #recycling #PET #plasticsrecycling

The 2025 targets for recycled content in PET bottles have been set, yet it appears that demand has not significantly increased, due to low prices for virgin PET. This raises in me questions about the credibility of recycled content claims on bottles. Are they genuinely being met, or are they simply "forgotten" to be updated? Mikko's comment was insightful, and I fully agree with his perspective. To the beverage industry and bottle users: now is the time to demonstrate your commitment to sustainability. By incorporating more recycled content, you can actively support the plastic waste recycling sector. Ignoring this responsibility today may undermine your sustainability claims and lead to significant costs tomorrow, as scarcity in recycled materials drives up prices. I recall PRSE a few years ago, where the beverage industry requested a "first right of refusal" for PET flakes before the textile industry could access them. Without the demand from the textile industry, the situation might be even worse today. Let’s prioritize a sustainable future by taking meaningful action today!

The European recycling industry is at risk of being swept away by a tsunami of virgin and recycled material due to the incompetence of our legislators. 👉 Europe is the strongest advocate of free trade, yet overregulation has pushed the industry to bear costs far higher than the rest of the world. 👉 This situation will be exploited by recycling companies outside Europe. 👉 There are already 124 non-European companies registered with EFSA, including 20 from China, 15 from India, 16 from Turkey, 13 from African countries, and 34 from the rest of Asia, among others. 👉 Over 100 ktn/year of recycled PET is now entering the EU27 from countries where no virgin PET is produced—60 ktn coming from Africa alone. ➡️ If the European Commission does not take urgent action, we will witness the massive bankruptcy of European recyclers between 2025 and 2026.
