World Diabetes Day: Let’s Talk About Diabetes Management with Empathy As a dietitian, I feel deep empathy for those living with diabetes, especially knowing that diet management and lifestyle changes are crucial for their treatment. Unlike others who may not have to be as mindful of every bite, diabetes patients rely on dietary choices as a primary line of therapy, which can make the journey challenging, especially with the abundance of misinformation online and offline. I hope that those with diabetes seek guidance from professionals, like dietitians and nutritionists, to navigate their nutritional needs safely. I recall working with a 15-year-old boy diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes who struggled with portion control. Despite having his carbohydrate intake calculated carefully in line with his daily insulin dose, he often sneaked extra snacks and food from the kitchen. Unfortunately, this habit impacted his blood glucose levels, leading to complications like nephropathy and retinopathy, affecting his kidneys and vision. During counseling, he confided in me that he felt hungry most of the time. Together, we explored ways to increase his meal satisfaction while adhering to his diet plan. I explained his condition in simple terms and empathized with his challenges, helping him understand the importance of staying consistent with his dietary goals. Another patient, a woman in her 40s, was newly diagnosed with diabetes and was deeply fearful after hearing stories of others who didn’t live long post-diagnosis. I reassured her that diabetes can be managed with the right dietary and lifestyle choices. With proper guidance, her blood glucose levels have remained stable for years. Diabetes management is achievable with the right information, and it’s essential to show compassion for those navigating this journey. For my fellow health professionals, I invite you to share your experiences in helping patients with diabetes in the comments. And for my wonderful audience, please share what you know about diabetes, or feel free to ask questions. #WorldDiabetesDay #DiabetesAwareness #DiabetesManagement #Type1Diabetes #Type2Diabetes #EmpathyInHealthcare #NutritionMatters #DietitiansCare #LifestyleChanges #HealthyLiving #BloodSugarControl #DiabetesSupport #NutritionForLife

1moLawal Adejoke Education and the right information should indeed be emphasize on diabetes. I remember the day a man walked into the pharmacy I worked and complained of frequent urination and weakness, he was advised to go to the hospital to run some test only to come back with the result of diabetes at 25 mmol/L 🙄 He said I hardly go for check ups..... But in less than two months his sugar levels came back to 6mmol/L .......all he did was to take his drugs, eat proper meal and came for checkup regularly. We indeed need to be mindful of our health and listen to our body. Lawal Adejoke thanks for sharing 🙌
