Our health centers will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. We’ll resume regular hours on Thursday, June 20. Our pharmacy will remain open. Juneteenth commemorates the events of June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger read a proclamation that all enslaved Black Americans in Texas were finally to be set free. Juneteenth emphasizes education, reflection, and restoration. We encourage you to use this time to educate yourself about the systemic racism and structural barriers that impact Black people in wealth, health care, the criminal justice system, housing, education, and more. Diversity initiatives at two Virginia universities may be at risk -- following the trend of targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion programming in higher ed across the country. It is crucial that DEI education remains comprehensive and effective for the safety and success of underserved students. Healthcare disparities exist in America in 2024. - Black Americans still receive worse care - Non-English speakers have trouble communicating with their care providers - LGBTQ+ rights are still often ignored These issues are not new. But, progress towards healthcare equity is possible, and everyone in the industry has a role to play. When caring for patients, overlooking their social determinants of health means missing the opportunity to treat the whole person. As healthcare professionals, we must work to identify and fix disparities in patient care. This is the only way we can truly make healthcare accessible and equitable for everyone.

One thing I'm asked about most often is book recommendations, so I'm excited to be able to share about Hope in a Box, now a project of Advocates for Youth. They offer curated book lists centering the stories of LGBTQ+ people and their experiences to support classroom inclusion and learning about our diversity of lived stories. And! Educators can apply to get tiers of support from Hope in a Box - from peer support, to dissemination of book lists and curricula, to capacity-building training. Apply to access these resources below! Today — one hundred fifty-nine years after slaves in Galveston, Texas were freed — we stand in unwavering solidarity with Black Americans in a continued pursuit of freedom, liberation, and justice. On this Juneteenth, we honor the generations of activists and organizers who put their bodies on the line to advocate for racial equity. The relentless determination of those activists, including Black LGBTQ+ young people, remind us that freedom is hard-fought, and too often, the first direct action is taken by the most marginalized folks on the ground. Allyship means making sure that those folks aren’t alone. The intersectionality of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, and gender expression is alive and authentic within Black culture. But racism and stigma has erased many Black queer folks from history. Today, we celebrate Audre Lorde, Marsha P. Johnson, Bayard Rustin, and Barbara Jordan — whose words and actions paved the way for political representation. We honor James Baldwin, Stormé DeLarverie, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy — whose contributions to art are cemented into American culture. We salute Andrea Jenkins, Laphonza Butler, Alicia Garza, and Patrisse Cullors — whose social justice work fuels Black liberation. And we honor and uplift you today, too 🧡 At The Trevor Project, our mission is to end suicide amongst LGBTQ+ young people. We know that while Black and BIPOC LGBTQ+ folks fight for racial equity, we must talk about the mental health impact that comes with experiencing injustice. According to our 2024 U.S. National Survey, 41% of Black or African American LGBTQ+ young people reported considering suicide in the last year, and 19% of Black or African American LGBTQ+ young people have been physically threatened or harmed in the past year because of their gender identity. Knowing the numbers matters; we can change them. This Juneteenth, The Trevor Project reinvigorates our daily commitment to advocating for Black and BIPOC LGBTQ+ young people. Change is Happening & Politicians Are Scared Right-wing backed school board candidates across the state were defeated during the General Municipal Election Day earlier this week. Voters sent the message they are over culture wars and want answers to actual issues impacting students and teachers. Meanwhile, the Missouri Legislature advanced a slew of other attacks focused on defunding public education and eliminating our established rule of one person, one vote. Here are TWO steps to take action this week: 1️⃣ Contact your representative and tell them to VOTE NO on SJR 74. They need to protect the voices of those who they represent. https://lnkd.in/gyMefrr9 2️⃣ Contact your representative, again, and urge them to VOTE NO on SB 727. Public education should be fully funded and LGBTQ+ students need to be protect. https://lnkd.in/gmYH77Ax

University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa Summary of changes: Offices; DEI-related activities Details: The University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa closed its Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; opened a Division of Opportunities, Connections, and Success to focus on students who face “educational access and achievement challenges"; closed its LGBTQ+ center, called Safe Zone; and required the Black Student Union to relocate from the university’s student center. Dr. Fábregas is the Executive Director of Con Mi MADRE, a nonprofit dedicated to #empowering Latina girls and their loved ones through education and emotional support. We talk about Texas State Bill-Seventeen, which is known informally as “the anti-DEI law,” shutting down diversity, equity and inclusion offices like university LGBTQ+ centers. Among the things we discuss: * SB-17 is changing the nonprofit landscape, it's important to "SB-17 proof" your organization * Difficult decisions must be made when you lead a nonprofit and the important thing is looking at the big picture and moving towards the decision that will ensure sustainable growth * Even during difficult times, the goal is to continue supporting all participants to the best of our ability * How can an organization that's run for 20 years continue to run for the next two decades? https://lnkd.in/emw4QvuW
