Transforming Accessibility in New Orleans: A Super Bowl Opportunity As New Orleans prepares to host the Super Bowl on February 9, local advocates are leveraging this major event to drive significant accessibility improvements across the city. With over 550 infrastructure projects focused on upgrading sidewalks and roads, the goal is to ensure that both residents and visitors, including those with disabilities, can fully enjoy everything the city has to offer. Mark Raymond Jr., a local disability advocate, emphasizes the need for a dual approach: enhancing the city's aesthetics while also making it functional and accessible for everyone. By addressing infrastructure deficiencies and improving communication, we can create a more inclusive environment for all fans. July is #DisabilityPrideMonth, and we want to take the chance to highlight some of the brilliant work being done by local Disabled people to make our cities more inclusive. Meet Colin. He first got involved with us as part of our early work to find a truly inclusive way to involve local Disabled people and caregivers in making their parks more accessible. He then joined the team and led the next stage of the project by bringing together a group of 15 Disabled people and caregivers from Hartcliffe to create a Park Action Plan for Hartcliffe Millennium Green. The group discovered significant barriers that prevent full use of the park and suggested a list of solutions that we will now address through our Reimagining Parks campaign. We're very pleased that as a result of their work, and on top of our Reimagining Parks campaign goal, we have secured an additional £20,000 to action many of the group's top recommendations. Work will be starting later in the year! As Hartcliffe has a high proportion of Disabled residents, having a park nearby that more people can use will make a real difference. Colin said: “Your Park has been working hard to highlight the fact that minorities suffer from unequal access to parks and green spaces - this includes Disabled people, women and girls, people from ethnic backgrounds, as well as those from poorer backgrounds. This is an issue that often goes unhighlighted within society but one, I feel, is vital." It was a true honor to speak at the Michigan Civil Rights Commission meeting on Monday to provide my perspective on improving accessibility in outdoor recreation. Legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), passed in 1990, and the recently passed EXPLORE Act have been significant milestones in ensuring that all people, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy activities equally. Central to outdoor innovation is accessibility. It’s important that we keep this momentum going in accessibility improvements as the Outdoor Recreation Innovation Action Network (ORIAN) and the economic ecosystem broadly expand outdoor recreation as an asset for our region. These initiatives towards a more accessible outdoor recreation community take many forms. As I shared with the Commission, this can include improving the resources already there through initiatives like enhancing trails and facilities, providing adaptive equipment, and conducting public awareness campaigns. And, it requires taking a proactive approach in intentionally designing recreation spaces so they’re inclusive, consulting with disability advocates, and keeping accessibility front of mind in innovation. As we continue to grow our region’s outdoor recreation economy, we can welcome so many more people when we create spaces where everyone can participate.  Transforming the region so that all are able to explore requires commitment at all levels, and I’m grateful for the Michigan Civil Rights Commission and their leadership. Today marks the 75th anniversary of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949. This landmark legislation transformed how we connect with nature, creating our National Parks UK and securing access to the countryside through public rights of way. Today, we have 15 National Parks across the UK—vital for recreation, reflection, and well-being. Yet, 75 years on, challenges remain. Access to green space is still unequal. Recent data shows 1 in 3 people in England lack access to a green or blue space within 15 minutes of home, rising sharply in economically deprived areas. Public rights of way, the Act's cornerstone, remain critical for connecting communities to nature. However, barriers to access persist for disabled individuals. Natural England reports 20% of people face mobility challenges, while mental and learning disabilities further compound inequalities. A 2016 Mencap report found 1 in 3 adults with learning disabilities spends less than an hour outside daily. Mental health challenges, sensory impairments, and invisible barriers further limit access. If the Act’s legacy is to be fully realised, the countryside must be welcoming and accessible to all. Initiatives such as accessible trails and adaptive equipment are helping, but more is needed to ensure inclusivity. Encouragingly, the UK Government today announced new legislation to ensure protected landscapes are fit for the future. This will strengthen National Parks’ role in tackling the nature and climate crises while improving access for everyone. It’s a step forward, building on the spirit of the 1949 Act: a vision of connection and transformation. In the 1940s, John Dower envisioned access to uncultivated land—moors, downs, coastlines, and waterways—for all to enjoy. While the final Act fell short of his ambition, his vision remains powerful. As we face modern challenges, we must reimagine our National Parks as places where people and nature thrive together. Today is a time to celebrate this monumental Act but also a call to action. Let’s protect rights of way, expand access, and ensure everyone—regardless of ability, background, or income—can connect with nature. Our landscapes are not just national treasures. They are shared spaces that inspire, heal, and connect us. 📢 🌟 New $5 Million Assistive Technology Pilot Launched The Hon. Bill Shorten MP, Minister for the NDIS, has announced a $5 million Assistive Technology Rental and Refurbishment Pilot, aimed at enhancing access to affordable assistive technology for people with disability. Key Details: Funding: Delivered through the Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) program. Partners: Delivered by Ability First Australia in collaboration with NovitaTech (SA) and St Giles (Tas), with a third location to be announced. Reach: Supporting over 600 individuals with disabilities across two years. Purpose: To reduce equipment waste, lower costs, and improve access to refurbished assistive technology. Minister Shorten said: 🗨️ "This pilot could help reengineer the assistive technology ecosystem. We want to stop the waste, and flow-on effects help not only get the right disability supports to those who need it but save money in the process."
