🎯 Nearly half of those who participated in our research believe they’ve been targeted by misinformation or disinformation. 📊 Where are people getting their news? - 70% rely on social media for information - 61% turn to digital media - 43% still tune into TV - Radio and newspapers trail behind with 9% and 7%, respectively. ➕ 77% of respondents feel society isn’t doing enough to tackle disinformation. 📖 Our latest research dives into the state of information integrity in Macedonia, exploring key issues like gender-based disinformation and harmful narratives targeting women, their societal roles, and women in public office. Read the executive summary to learn more about these pressing challenges and potential solutions. 💡 Happy to have worked with my colleagues Blazhen Maleski, Kristina Plecic, Biljana Cvetanovska Gugoska and Darko Chekerovski from UNDP North Macedonia on the short summary of a research process led by Здружение ЗМАИ and Pikasa Analytics

👋 6️⃣ Global Perspectives 2024: Truth, Trust and Technology. 📢 We are in our final session of Global Perspectives 2024, shifting focus once again, to deep-dive into the transformative potential of citizen data and digital approaches. 🌍 Fresh from the World Data Forum in Medellín, our Leave No One Behind community is exploring how citizen data and digital approaches foster trust and inclusion. 🔎 In our final session for Global Perspectives 2024, our panel is exploring: 🔵The role of digital tools in citizen-led monitoring and advocacy, unpacking how digital tools can be leveraged to support monitoring initiatives led by citizens and marginalised communities. 🔵Looking at how evidence-based advocacy can ensure that community voices are directly represented in decision making processes. 🔵How collaboration can help to address the digital divide and ensure that marginalised communities benefit from technological advances and data-driven solutions. 🔵Delving into the use of algorithms for qualitative data. 🔵Mapping out how digital approaches through citizen data can help build trust, government transparency, accountability, and representation. #GlobalPerspectives #CitizenData 🫶Thanks to our wonderful panel~ Ayman Akkad from the International Civil Society Centre, Florence Syevuo from the SDGs Kenya Forum, Saionara Reis from the Danish Institute for Human Rights, and Joseph Hassine at Google. That's a wrap! 💙We would like to thank all of our distinguished speakers and guests for taking the time to be part of this captivating day of poignant topics. 🌍 New Research Report Alert! I am thrilled to share that our research report, “Strengthening Democracy by Reducing Threats Against Women in Politics,” is now published and available for reading here: https://lnkd.in/g46SnPAY This report, edited by researchers Hannah Phillips and Rosario Grimà Algora, and co-authored by myself and my colleagues, Amna Baig, Prakriti Bhattarai, Jaclyn Corin and Ema Grajcarová, sheds light on the shared challenges women face in political spheres worldwide, as well as the strategic solutions we explored during our policy report placements. In my contribution, featured on page 22, I focused on Sub-Saharan Africa, identifying primary perpetrators of violence against women in politics, analyzing their motivations through Social Identity Theory (SIT), and highlighting the profound impact of these actions on women's roles in governance. Our research reveals common challenges across diverse regions, from the EU and Sub-Saharan Africa to the US and Pakistan, including: 1️⃣ The political reluctance to recognize violence against women in politics as a distinct issue, 2️⃣ The inadequate enforcement of legal frameworks, and 3️⃣ The need for stronger global and national action to regulate social media and address online abuses effectively. My journey in the Master of Public Policy program has been transformative, and I am deeply grateful to the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford for this opportunity. Special thanks to my colleagues and editors, who have provided invaluable insights and collaboration throughout this process. Together, let’s keep pushing for a safer, more inclusive political landscape especially for women worldwide! #WomenInPolitics #Democracy #SocialImpact #PolicyResearch

Data absence is a persistent problem across disciplines and fields. In studying women's roles in historic North Africa, it was a particularly difficult challenge, so I developed methods to identify women based on fragments of information from textual sources. To the original dataset of named entities, I added unnamed but referenced women (e.g., "the daughter of Ahmed") and women whose existence could be inferred based on a identified father-son relationship. For more information about this strategy, quantitative network analysis, and the results, see my forthcoming book, Visualizing History's Fragments (Palgrave, 2024)!

We are pleased to announce the published version of our research. Our Sacred Responsibilities is a report prepared for the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) by Keepers of the Circle to examine how the MMIWG Calls for Justice (specifically Call for Justice 13.5) can be implemented in resource development projects and the Impact Assessment process. This report offers tangible and measurable mitigation measures that Indigenous communities, IAAC, developers, NGOs, small and medium enterprises, and other interested parties can implement to support Indigenous women, girls, and gender diverse people through all stages of a resource development project. The recommended mitigation measures encompass Culturally Relevant Gender Based Analysis Plus, Meaningful Engagement, Policies and Practices, On-Site Resources and Supports, Off-Site Resources and Supports, and Alternative Mitigation Pathways for Non-Participants. This research would not have been possible without the amazing contributions of the Indigenous women and gender diverse people that participated in our study, along with the cumulative expertise of Indigenous leaders, practitioners, and organizers that gave us advice and guided us. For any inquiries or comments please feel free to reach out to either myself or Hannah Skelding, co-author of this report.

NEW BLOG: In the realm of democracy, opinions shape our collective voice, yet translating these diverse perspectives into meaningful data requires precision. Collaborating with The Asia Foundation, we've undertaken rigorous perception surveys in Bangladesh since 2019, delving into issues from governance to societal concerns. Our insights illuminate the intricacies of survey design, from tackling respondent embarrassment to navigating language nuances. While quantitative surveys offer snapshots of public sentiment, understanding the "why" demands deeper exploration, urging us to refine our methods and amplify the voices shaping our democratic discourse. https://lnkd.in/g926P6YM
