🚗🔋 New Data Shows Multifamily Residents Are 2.5X More Likely to Own an EV with Home Charging Access, Despite Paying a 51% Higher Premium. A recent survey has revealed that residents of multifamily properties (apartments, condos, etc.) are 2.5x more likely to own an EV if they have access to charging at home. 🌱 Without at-home EV charging, the number of residents planning to own or drive an EV in the next five years drops dramatically from 62% to 25%! Key Findings: - 67% of residents say EV charging at their building would make them more likely to get an EV. - 47% of respondents prioritize a sustainable lifestyle, and 66% believe that EV charging would benefit their community. - Barriers like high EV costs and lack of charging infrastructure are still major roadblocks for many multifamily residents. At ChargeBay, we’re committed to closing this gap by offering innovative, turnkey EV charging solutions tailored for multifamily properties. From installation to smart-car integration, we're focused on making EV adoption easier and more accessible for everyone. ⚡ Let's accelerate the shift to a cleaner, more sustainable future! 🌍 #EVCharging #Sustainability #ElectricVehicles #MultifamilyLiving #SmartCities #ChargeBay #CleanEnergy

Transitioning to EVs is a positive step toward sustainability, but there’s a significant bottleneck: drivers face challenges charging where they need to most, at home. An NMHC survey revealed that 83% of EV owners prefer to charge at home. However, for those living in multifamily dwellings—apartments, condos, and townhomes, which account for 31.4% of all U.S. housing—there is a lack of EV equity and significant friction in their EV charging experience. Unlike single-family home residents, who can charge their vehicles without hassle, multifamily dwellers rely on their property owners to provide EV charging stations. To outfit a multifamily property with adequate EV charging capabilities, property owners face several challenges sharing in this article.

For the nearly one-third of U.S. households that reside in multifamily homes (MFHs), barriers to convenient home charging prevent an equitable shift to #electricvehicles. As the EV market moves out of the early adopter phase, addressing MFH charging barriers would also help to support historically marginalized communities in the #EV transition and avoid exacerbating existing inequities. ✍️In our new briefing, we’ve highlighted barriers, solutions, and equity considerations in 5 areas... 🏢 Building codes 🅿️ Parking management 🔌 Electrical issues 💸 Capital costs 🤝Stakeholder engagement Considering these areas could ensure that those living in MFHs are not reliant on more expensive, less convenient public charging options than those living in single-family homes. How much more likely are people to get an EV if they can charge at home? How many multifamily residents have access to charging today? We did a survey to get the answers to these and other questions. Here are some highlights of what we learned. 📈 US multifamily residents are 2.5x more likely to own an EV if they have charging at home 🪫 82% of non-EV drivers are without EV charging in their buildings 🚗 67% say that having EV charging in their building would make them consider getting an EV 😞 31% of non-EV owners cite lack of charging in their building as a barrier to using an EV The big takeaway: We need to do more to get folks in multifamily dwellings set up for success with EVs. We’re in the middle of an important, society-wide transition from ICE vehicles to EVs. With about a third of the population living in multifamily homes, it’s important that we ensure vehicle ownership remains fair, accessible, and affordable to all. And that means we need to get more charging stations onto more multifamily properties as quickly as possible. Fortunately, that’s what SWTCH is all about. The Rise of Electric Vehicles: Charging Challenges in Multifamily Housing EV adoption is on the rise, with sales projected to reach 45 million by 2030 and 65 million by 2035. However, the shift to EVs poses unique challenges, especially for the 31.4% of Americans residing in multifamily housing. Unlike single-family homeowners, these residents rely on property owners to provide charging infrastructure, which can be costly, energy-inefficient, and demanding in terms of maintenance. Space constraints, outdated electrical systems, and evolving regulations further complicate the situation. To keep up with the increasing demand for EV charging in multifamily housing, building owners must proactively tackle these obstacles. This entails addressing the barriers, optimizing energy consumption, and exploring innovative solutions to ensure fair and accessible EV charging options for all residents. Building a sustainable and efficient charging infrastructure is crucial in promoting the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. Read More {Buildings Magazine}
