I think it’s impossible for anyone single person to cover all these roles no matter the size of an organization. When starting out I completely agree with hiring a generalist to help you get things moving. But as your business grow (especially to the size of a “Massy”) you must realize that you now need specialist to aid your efforts. A lot of companies underestimate the value in marketing and think it’s just posting some pictures and videos here and there, oh and keeping up with trends. I assure it’s much deeper than that. Business Development, marketing and sales should all work hand in hand to facilitate growth of a company. And if you’re not growing then something is wrong and you need to switch gears.

My eyes were lit up in shock with my mouth dropping at different intervals while watching this video (I watched others under this series too, same reaction) This is not because I have not seen ridiculous marketing job openings before. I really can never get used to it. While I have expressed my shock (hopefully well enough), It is worthy of mention that marketing professionals need to be more vocal and clear about the marketing industry JD dynamics. Can one person be versatile enough to possess a good number of skills? Yes. Do you need to possess a good number of skills to be invaluable in our industry? Yes. Minus the burnout and incoming competence-questioning against the professional, Is it recommended for a business to expect one individual to carry out a handful of SPECIALIZED skillsets? No. Your brand will suffer for it. Get a team or lower your expectations. Thank you Keron Rose for this series; our eyes can’t be opened enough.

You don’t need to hire a PR specialist or a graphic designer to make a media kit. You can do it on your own using clever copywriting, free tools, and plug-and-play media kit templates. Media kits can be interactive and rich or static and basic—there’s no one way to do it. How you make it will mostly depend on your audience, industry, and bandwidth. However, keeping it simple better fulfills the overall purpose: making a reporter’s job easier. Focus on the main areas: 📦Branding: Provide a few different sizes and qualities of your company’s logo to ensure the reporters don’t have to stretch your files. Include a PNG version with a transparent background, as well as a condensed style guide. 📦Executive headshots and bios: The press frequently uses snippets from bios to add depth to their articles. They want to know each executive’s role in the company so include this information together with a few quotes from your key players and attach high-quality headshots of each of them. 📦Images and videos: Include images or videos of your product in use. Consider getting some b-roll of your office and day-to-day operations. Add product images of your goods, and include action shots. If you have a digital product, include screenshots of it. 📦Contact information: Provide the contact information for whom the press should contact. Add only the point of contact who’ll be handling press relations. 📦Statistics and research: Reporters love to use numbers. If you have revenue, customer totals, social followers, or any other data you can share, add it here. 📦Brief company history: Keep it simple - a paragraph or two about your origin story, mission, and vision. Add any huge milestones in bullet-points to make it more digestible. 📦Testimonials: Include case studies, reviews, and customer testimonials here. Short one-sentence quotes work well here too.
