And then… In December 2022, Clark Quinn became co-director of LDA. We asked him to share the story and what LDA represents to him: 🎙️”I was happy to join the first Learning Development Conference, with its focus on evidence-based content. I thus was similarly happy to hear about the founding of the Learning Development Accelerator, and was an early adopter. I’ve bemoaned (mostly privately) the fact that mainstream conferences can highlight dubious ideas, owing to their processes and funding models. I was therefore honored to be asked to co-direct the society in an ongoing way. To me, the LDA is about exploring what’s known about the translation of learning and cognitive science to meeting organizational learning and performance needs. We experiment programmatically with different ideas (not all of which work!), and retain our funding to membership: no vendors with barrows to push. We feel it’s a place for people to learn what’s important without any agenda except improving what’s known and sharing principles that can drive better outcomes. I’m thrilled that we’ve developed a smart audience who join us on the journeys, and that a substantial proportion of our programs have explored meaningful ideas and provided valuable insights. We continue to look for new ways to strike the balance between providing a valuable offering and doing so on a sustainable basis. Our intent is on creating a valuable offering to those who want to do L&D right, and I think we’re doing as good a job as I’ve seen.“ #learninganddevelopment

My reflections on building learning communities... Yesterday, in our internal meeting, Deepti Menon pointed out that our new initiatives might be tilting too much toward theory and research, leaving less room for practical application and experience-sharing. (Context: we are launching an evidence-based learning design reading club, bite-sized research insights, etc.) It's a fair point. As a moderators of Learning Designers Community (LDC), we know that our members seek a variety of things—sharing real-world experiences, getting new perspectives, learning about innovations, understanding and discussing learning theories, resources and guidance, and practicing what they learn. We discussed how our monthly meet-ups should address the needs of those interested in applying the new insights gained from our webinars, and create a space for sharing experiences, insights, and challenges. So here’s what we’re doing: Next week, Miriam Elnaggar and Parisha Jain will host a meetup focused on applying interdisciplinary insights from our webinar into real-world learning design. And with Ragini Lall, we’re kicking off an evidence-based reading group to dive deep into academic papers and engage in discussions to refine our perspective and practice! The takeaway: It’s a delicate balance. Overemphasizing theory without application can feel disconnected, while practice without theory and research limits broader understanding and growth.
