A fair opinion in #WSJ. Being PR pros/flacks puts us in the role of fact finder and fact messenger. We should also be allowed to push back on our internal or external clients when we know that the facts are wrong or misleading. It is a difficult position while we balance protecting our clients’ name while maintaining honest and helpful relationships with the media. Here, it’s the public that is the ultimate client. There are times when our fact-finding time may miss a deadline. No information is better than wrong information. In reality, reporters and flacks often work together to get correct information out to the public when it’s material. Ignoring journalists’ requests is unprofessional and lying to them is far worse. In this case, only a few people know what truth was available at the time of responding to the press. Given the importance and impact, it would have been advisable to wait and confirm details before responding to media. The result is more damaging and embarrassing than simply letting journalists know that time is needed for accurate information. As a spokesperson, if we are handed information that we are told is true we are left with no alternatives other than to put it out. Although we are left with hindsight and a lesson in who and how we are told what messages we are permitted to deliver and when.

The recent knife attacks in Bondi Junction this past Saturday, then another solo knife attack yesterday inside an Assyrian Church on Sunday highlighted something quite dangerous; the media’s willingness to forgo proper journalism in favour of being first to release the news. The hunt for a scoop should not supercede the need for an accurate account as to what is happening. In the hours of uncertainty immediately following the attacks, the “reporting” around what was happening and by whom was nothing less than speculative. As the police were investigating and securing the surroundings, you could see how the journalist were putting their cameras and microphones infront of anyone who walked by. One bothersome viewing was when the TV journalist was interviewing a mother and her two teenage twin daughters. The mother and twins were obviously shaken and the mother had even asked the journalist to stop as they just wanted to go home to safety. To my dismay, the plea was ignored as the questions continued. So very disturbing. The media somehow feels that their competition isn’t other media outlets but the social ones. Given all the false information out on social media, is this really wise to benchmark themselves to FaceBook? You can almost understand how the media starts and flames such a fire; there is speculation that this might be a terrorist attack, to it’s believed that it was a terrorist attack, to within minutes turning into click bait, it was a terrorist attack. 🤦🏼♂️ It’s understandable why journalists are concerned about how too many get their news from FaceBook, but it’s more concerning when mainstream media turns speculation into “news” in order to be first. The consequences of the latter can be as dire as the former. Not only is this important for the general public, but it’s even more so for the families impacted by such a horrible and senseless tragedy. Leave it to Denzel Washington to sum it up nicely. If you don’t read newspapers, you’re uninformed. If you read it, you’re misinformed.

Australia's bold move is undeniably well-intentioned, but it risks oversimplifying a nuanced issue. Social media is not inherently good or bad—it’s a tool, and its impact depends on how it’s used and regulated. Instead of debating whether this ban is right or wrong, perhaps the conversation should shift toward designing holistic solutions that address the root causes of online harm. #SocialMediaPolicy #DigitalRegulation #SocialMediaBan #TechForGood #CyberSafety
