Not all Hispanic and Latinos share the same background, and assuming so can lead to misunderstandings. While there are common threads, each community has its own unique history, traditions, and customs. For instance: 🗣️🌎Language: Spanish may be widely spoken, but there are significant populations fluent in Portuguese, and indigenous languages. Moreover, variations in accents and dialects abound within Spanish-speaking communities. 🍲🌶️🍍Cuisine: Hispanic and Latino cuisine is a delicious blend of indigenous, African, European, and Asian influences. However, the specific dishes and flavors vary greatly across regions and countries. ⛪🕊️🌿Religion: While Catholicism is often predominant, Hispanic and Latino communities also practice a diverse range of faiths including Protestantism, Judaism, and indigenous spiritual beliefs. Each of these adds a unique dimension to the cultural fabric of these communities. Assuming a uniform background overlooks this rich tapestry of diversity, undermining the unique identities and experiences within Hispanic/Latino communities. Let's celebrate this richness and connect authentically! Do you identify as Hispanic, Latino/a, Latinx, Latine, Indigenous, or something else? Like most things, there is no one-size-fits-all discourse around which term to use. What’s important is to emphasize respect and adjust to the preferences of the person or group that you are speaking to. Everybody has the right to use the term that captures who they are and that feels the most welcoming to them. Friendly Reminder: Latin American / Hispanic heritage month starts on Sept 15. Out of courtesy, you should have already booked your speakers/consultants for whatever celebration your organization, company, school, etc. plans to do. If you haven't done so already, get to that this week. And remember not to tokenize! 1. consult with actual members of the community as you plan events and social media posts 2. remember that Latin America is diverse and is comprised of various countries with their own unique cultures. Please don't just center Mexico. 3. Make space for Afro-Latinx members to feel seen and for Portuguese and Indigenous dialects to feel celebrated. Latin Americans come in all colors and don't all speak Spanish. These are just three simple suggestions. Do your research. And if you need a consultant, reach out!

Is it Hispanic or Latinx? Or neither? I've been told what to call myself since the day I was born The U.S. government Invented the term Hispanic To denote those of Spanish origin or descent And to categorize us for the U.S. census Ignoring the indigenous communities across Latin America who don't speak Spanish Or Brazil Where they speak Portuguese What can be problematic For some of us is By denoting our "Spanish" ancestry it exalts our connection to our conquerors Latinx Is a controversial term for many reasons The x is gender neutral and is used instead of Latino or Latina X is controversial because it's not easy to pronounce in Spanish Therefore some folx prefer Latine or Latin Some folx would say Why are we exalting the language of our conquerors? Spanish. And some would say Why are we exalting the language of our conquerors? English. There is no right answer But above all Remember Hispanic and Latinx Are not the same thing I am not Hispanic I am Latinx I am a Latina However I much prefer Mexican Ecuadorian And American from both North and South America. If you don't know someone's identity Don't assume And just ask. The "correct" term Is a personal choice. With a deep sense of pride Somos magia mi gente. ----- I create content about #leadership development and #Latinx folx. Follow & hit the 🔔 on my profile for weekday content.

As a teenage immigrant from Costa Rica, I spent my undergraduate years in Washington, DC learning about Latin America, thinking of myself as a Costa Rican who happened to then have a home in NY. It wasn’t until graduate school reading and learning from women sociologists of color that I crafted my identity as a proud bilingual Latina in the US. As a parent of Costa Rican born pre-teen and teen with varying levels of Spanish fluency, living in North Carolina, I have experienced the range of emotions from pride to shame. The pressure to assimilate in a cultural and political milieu that mostly ignores, or misunderstands, or caricatures, or blames Latinas and Latinos is significant. What does it mean to be Latina? What does it mean to be American? Are both identities mutually exclusive? Why don’t K-12 schools promote and teach bilingualism? How can we move from binary to intersectional understanding of identities and the impact on self and society? How do Hispanic, Latina, Latino, Latinx, Latine labels hinder or promote cultural, economic, political understanding of 65 million diverse individuals in the US with roots in Latin American countries—and for some in the southwest before it become part of the US? Why does it take graduate school to be exposed to multiple sources of wisdom? #proudlatina #equityineducation #bilingualismrocks #hispanicservinginstitutions

🎨 Excited to unveil my latest art, "Tribe”, which captures the resilience and pride of Native American communities. This piece depicts a humble representative of a native tribe, embodying the rich cultural heritage and deep-rooted beliefs passed down through generations. My art aims to shed light on these struggles while celebrating their resilience and determination to preserve their heritage. Learning Native Americans are the indigenous people of the United States and Canada, with a diverse tapestry of cultures, languages, and traditions. Yet, they face formidable challenges such as poverty, limited access to healthcare and education, and discrimination. Politically, native American tribes are recognized as sovereign nations, but historical injustices like forced relocation and assimilation efforts have hindered their autonomy. Despite these obstacles, they continue to advocate for their rights, including land sovereignty and the preservation of their cultural identity. In Congress, voices like Deb Haaland and Sharice Davids champion native American rights, bringing political acumen and a deep understanding of their communities' struggles. Their presence serves as a beacon of hope, driving forward the fight for justice and recognition. #NativeAmerican #Art #Culture #Representation #SocialJustice #IndigenousRights
