Remember: speak human to human. ➊ 𝐁𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞. Reframe conflict as collaboration to lower the sense of a perceived loss and minimize the “threat” response. ➋ 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞. Recognize similarities and differences to see shared humanity. Understanding these deeper needs elicits trust and promotes positive language & behaviors to maintain respect during conflict. ➌ 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞. Anticipate reactions and skillfully confront difficult conversations head-on by preparing for possible reactions. ➍ 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤, 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬. If you believe you already know what the other person is thinking, then you’re not ready to have a conversation. Instead, adopt a curiosity mindset, knowing you don’t have all the facts. ➎ 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Asking for feedback on your own skills sets the tone for your team and models fallibility, which increases trust in leaders. ➏ 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞.
