Glad to spend the semester learning and practicing Inclusion – especially at this difficult time… Thanks #Gradfutures for the excellent organization! Thoughts that I found illuminating: (1) Diversity is not only about “identity politics”, but rather, diversity itself has value. A diverse team might start slowly but has more innovation potential than a homogeneous team. (2) I feel that people hate DEI because of a biased perception. How often is some minority person not promoted, compared to being promoted, simply because of their identity? When we hate diversity because of the possibility that someone getting promoted simply because of identity, keep in mind that the opposite is actually what’s happening. WE ARE NOT THERE YET. (3) There are simple things to do when we see bullying happen – simply by saying “this is not cool” might cut off the bully’s source of affirmation. (4) Women and racial minority people are more interrupted when they talk, and they are allocated fewer chances to shine. As women and minority we cannot change this immediately, but we could be more aware and defend ourselves and people around us when this happens.

In the spirit of #GRADitude, I'm grateful to the scholars who completed the Princeton University Graduate School's fourth #GradFUTURES Inclusive Leadership Learning Cohort. The cohort wrapped up this week and their capstone presentations demonstrated their ongoing commitment to becoming leaders who prioritize inclusion, diversity, and equity at every level. Participants engaged in interdisciplinary discussions about case studies, studied Deloitte's Six Traits of Inclusive Leaders and the Social Change Model, completed the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and Harvard Project Implicit assessments, and developed a personal definition of inclusive leadership and a plan for applying those skills in ways that make a difference in various spheres of influence and professional contexts. Bravo to this amazing group!
