I recently had the pleasure of presenting a webinar for The Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) Policy & Advocacy Management Team on one of the essential skills of leadership – 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠. Most of us find 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 feedback harder than receiving it, often fearing we’ll hurt others’ feelings. But as Brené Brown wisely puts it, “𝘊𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘥. 𝘜𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘥.” Clear, actionable feedback can strengthen our connections and foster real growth when delivered thoughtfully. We discussed the 𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘳 approach, which calls for both caring personally and challenging directly. When we balance compassion with honest feedback, we create an environment where people feel respected and supported in their development. One of the comments during the session really struck me: the need for feedback training is a bit like CPR training – even if we’ve done it before, we benefit from revisiting and refining these skills. With regular, consistent practice, we can build the confidence to deliver feedback that helps others – and ourselves – thrive. Thank you to the RANZCR team for inviting me into this conversation. If I can help you or your team hone your feedback skills, please let me know! #LeadershipSkills #RadicalCandour #ClearIsKind #FeedbackMatters #ContinuousLearning

Every time I attend a CAS board meeting, I find myself reflecting on the powerful words emblazoned on the wall: truth & reconciliation, equity & diversity, inclusivity, and services en français. These words serve as more than mere decorations; they are constant, visual reminders of the core values we strive to embody in our work every day. I have often emphasized the importance of these visual cues. They remind us to remain steadfast in our commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive environment for everyone. As we navigate the complexities of our daily responsibilities, these values guide our actions and decisions, ensuring that we do not lose sight of the bigger picture. We all need these important reminders in what we do every day. By keeping these principles at the forefront of our minds, we can better serve our communities and foster a culture of respect and understanding.
