The JAG Advantage focuses on: 1) Project-Based Learning (teaching soft skills in real world situations); 2) Trauma Informed Care (providing emotional support & resources as needed); 3) Employer Engagement (informing students about various career opportunities). What our students have said about the JAG program: “It has helped me set goals for my life.” “It opened my eyes to reality and life beyond high school.” “It has changed my life.” “It taught me to be a leader.” Here’s another impact story: One of our JAG KY State Officers lives with and takes care of his grandmother. He has to work while going to school to help pay the bills. He said JAG has given him the support, confidence, and skills needed for him to be successful in whatever career he pursues. Wow. 8 years ago today, a young Daniel with butterflies in his stomach moved onto campus at the University of the Cumberlands. His heart was tense as he wondered what to expect and whether he would enjoy the new sensation. Before he knew it, young Daniel met some of the most incredible people in my life who significantly impacted me. Before he knew it, young Daniel was involved with groups and departments throughout campus that significantly impacted his future, including being the college mascot—Pete the Patriot! Some tips from my experience as a college alum and former college mascot: 1. Actively participate in extracurricular activities and take advantage of opportunities, but only a few simultaneously. 2. Seek help before a problem emerges. 3. Feel free to drop a class. 4. Stay healthy. Eat healthy and find the time to exercise. Doing so will help you more than you know. 5. Cultivate friendships with a small group of others you connect well with—it's easy to be friends with everyone on campus (especially if you or you build your way up to becoming an extrovert). Usually, your friend group gets smaller after college, and you become very closely connected with those few friends with whom you initially connected well (mine live in Knoxville, and I talk to them almost daily!). 6. Most importantly - think of your education as giving you skills that will help you make a positive mark on this world. I am thinking about all of the first-year students and all college students who are continuing their education this month. These are our emerging leaders who will make an impact on the world.

Stepping Outside of Comfort Zones: The Journey That Changed Everything In August 1987, I was just a fresh high school graduate from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, preparing for a milestone: heading off to the University of Tampa in Florida. As the only son of a single mother, the plan was simple. My mom would send me off on a flight to start the next chapter of my life. But life had other plans. A good friend of mine, John, was also heading to the University of Tampa. Unlike me, John couldn’t fly—he was planning to drive his old pickup truck, but he needed a co-driver to make the trip possible. Without hesitation, he asked me. The ask wasn’t simple. In 1987, we were only a decade removed from Jim Crow, and racial tensions were still simmering across the Deep South. John and I, two 18-year-olds—one Black, one white—would be embarking on a road trip through Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama. It wasn’t lost on me—or my mother—that this was no small thing. To my surprise, my mom said yes. Her dream of sending her son off on a plane turned into something far more profound. Together, John and I set out on a journey that symbolized not just a transition into adulthood, but the progress of a nation striving to move past its painful history. At the time, I didn’t grasp the significance of it all. I was just excited for college and a new chapter. But now, I see that journey for what it was: a lesson in stepping outside of comfort zones, embracing the unknown, and trusting the shared humanity between people. That trip wasn’t just about getting to college—it was about growth, courage, and friendship. It was proof that sometimes, the most transformative opportunities lie in the unexpected. So, ask yourself: What could stepping outside of your comfort zone open up for you? #GrowthMindset #BreakingBarriers #LifeLessons #SteppingOutOfComfortZones #LeadershipJourney #DiversityAndInclusion #TransformationalMoments
