We at Leadership Lab NZ, both Tangata Whenua and Tangata Tiriti are all committed to giving effect to the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The Rangatira always intended these to create a space for all cultures to live together in Aotearoa, and we are fully committed to playing our part in advocating for Ōritetanga - addressing inequities due to the breaches of this agreement over the last 180+ years. The sooner we can put the distraction and futility of this current Govt Bill aside and continue on the work of creating equity for all, the better. The rarety of my wholesale agreement with a political speech suggests I mark it with the modern act of solidarity that is the repost. The consequences of colonialism are, typically, entrenched unfairness and disadvantage against the descendents of colonised people. New Zealand is no different in this respect. To address this in some ways a framework of principles has been established to allow for flexible and appropriate interventions against certain entrenched inequalities of practice and policy, such as in healthcare and access to State benefits. This bill is seeking to destroy that framework in order to entrench the privileges arising from colonial ancestry, and the exclusions placed on descendants of indigenous people. To win support, the bill is recast as actually creating equality, by removing the interventions of the principles, because they benefit one section of the population. This is like saying people who are run over by trucks should not have medical treatment because it's an inequity against people who are not run over by trucks. Equality is contextual, and so of course should be measured net across all contexts, not per context. Beneficiaries of net inequality often highlight contextual differences without thinking, knowing, or caring about the overall net effects. In this speech, a politician rightly calls out her peers for any attempt to leverage this for personal gain. She cannot do more than call out the truth.

Capitalism isn't a singular model - we live under a very distinct form of colonial capitalism which entrenches extractive systems, centralising profit into smaller and smaller circles of humanity. We have played this model out and have reached the end game; a system with an environment on fire, a system which no longer pulls everyone up, but rather a form of neo-feudalism where the wealthiest have more money than God (Elon is worth 5-10x more than the Catholic church) - and new generations (starting with millennials) are statistically worse off than the generation before them. Sustainable and regenerative models for capitalism can exist - Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Māori principles can provide a blueprint for how; Rangatiratanga, Equity, Active protection, Options, and Partnership.

The speech could be voiced across many countries where people are bring oppressed. It could apply to oppression within any environment and by any group that is being oppressed by another. We must all stand together when doing the right thing is better than following the status quo. Admitting the truth is part of a learning process as is accepting responsibility and being accountable.
