Watch this please! Daniella Ballou-Aares makes a compelling case: “Pro-Democracy Business Leaders stay out of politics because it's the safe thing to do, it's the respectable thing to do...BUT history tells us that when business leaders stay out of politics - from Nazi Germany to modern-day Turkey and Hungary - they passively enable autocrats, and democracies collapse. When business leaders engage, we have a better chance of protecting our democracy.” 'But when business leaders engage, we have a better chance of democracy surviving. As occurred in South Africa, when a group of business leaders played a pivotal role in ending apartheid without a civil war.' This highlights the powerful impact that business leaders can have on promoting and preserving democratic values when they choose to actively participate in political processes."
My TED Talk is live. In it, I offer a concrete path to action to protect American democracy and discuss the risks that business leaders in the US and globally face as democracy erodes. “Communism might be a distant memory, but authoritarianism is on the rise. And for those who built careers in business, assuming that rule of law and democratic capitalism would remain intact, we now have the obligation, the opportunity, the power to take action.” #TEDTalk #Democracy #Leadership Leadership Now Project

“Don’t talk about politics!” I’m not. I’m talking about leadership. Our democracy can survive or fall depending on who we choose to lead us. “Everything rises and falls on leadership.” John Maxwell We can’t afford to choose a leader who fosters division. We can’t choose a leader who acts like a child, “When I was child I thought like a child, acted like a child . . . when I became a man I put away childish things.” We have too many complex issues facing us. We are inching closer to arguably, the most important Presidential election of a lifetime. It’s not about politics; it’s about Leadership. Sharing an excellent Ted Talk on how business leaders can renew democracy. . #democracy #leadership #vote2024 #commongood

Today the third question I asked an international meeting of political leaders during my opening keynote: Who are our people - who do we listen to and why? As leaders we tend to get stuck in our small bubble of close advisors (who often also want to protect us with the best of intentions), and we then become entirely dependent on them and their by nature limited perspectives for making far-reaching policy decisions, forgetting to listen equally to the other sides and perspectives of the storyline. We need however to add another element here, and that is the plague of cancel culture. Increasingly, governments, international organizations and citizens alike, in different shapes or forms, are unwilling or unable to deal with opinions and assessments contrary or otherwise diverging from their own. The core democratic virtue of respectful debate with my opponent and disagreement through reasoned arguments is at stake.
