Since 1971, India has recognized the right to abortion under the MTP Act, with recent amendments extending the permissible period to 24 weeks in special cases. Despite these advancements, the road to reproductive justice remains fraught with challenges. Great news for #ReproductiveJustice! The Supreme Court has ruled to preserve access to #Mifepristone, a crucial medication used in medication abortions. While it’s unfortunate that the accessibility of crucial healthcare services like this must be defended at such high levels, this decision is a win in the long-standing battle to ensure that everyone has the right to make informed decisions about their #ReproductiveHealth. This ruling highlights the critical importance of advocacy and vigilance in ensuring that reproductive rights are upheld and accessible to all. https://lnkd.in/dM_TQcZT

Today is International Safe Abortion Day. Abortion is healthcare and access to abortion is a human right. For over a decade, we’ve been fighting to ensure that people in every Australian state and territory have the right to decide what happens to their body. This year, we celebrated the decriminalisation of abortion in Western Australia. This moment marked the decriminalisation of abortion by doctors across all Australian states and territories. But the fight isn’t over, with much to be done to ensure that every person can access abortion care regardless of where they live and how much money they have. There continue to be attempts to restrict access to abortion, undermining the health, dignity and autonomy of patients. This week in South Australia, Liberal MP Ben Hood proposed laws which would require people seeking an abortion from 28 weeks to be forced to give birth. We’re committed to ensuring that hard-won reproductive rights are protected nationwide, and that every person can access abortion care. 📸 Katie Robertson, Adrianne Walters and Emily Howie, outside the Federal Circuit Court in Melbourne.

Jan Diehm & Michelle Pera-McGhee created an illustrated #maze that reveals just how hard it can be to access abortion care in each state in the US 🇺🇸. Each state’s maze reflects the difficulty of navigating policies shaped by the 2022 Dobbs ruling📜, which gave states the power to restrict or protect abortion rights. Since then, 13 states have completely banned abortion, while others have added layers of obstacles. Meanwhile, some states have moved to strengthen access, creating a complex patchwork of laws that defines abortion care in America today. Incredible work by The Pudding that shows how complicated the journey has become. A new report shares stories from individuals across the country who have been harmed by restrictive laws and practices in their states, putting a human face on the multitude of problems that occur when we are denied the right to #abortion. In addition to abortion bans and restrictions in 21 states, barriers for emergency medical care and efforts to criminalize abortions that threaten pregnant people and healthcare workers alike have all led to the current human rights crisis. The spread of false information and stigmatization of abortion in addition to provision of unqualified care by so-called crisis pregnancy centers – often run by activists who oppose abortion – is also contributing to the crisis, according to the report. #reprorights #womensrights #genderequality #womenshealth Read more: https://lnkd.in/gzrZKQbW

Following the Supreme Court‘s pivotal decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, the right to abortion has become uncertain, placing access in constant jeopardy. Thankfully on Thursday, the Supreme Court declined to restrict access to mifepristone, dismissing a challenge from anti-abortion doctors and upholding abortion rights in the process. While the importance of medication abortion in upholding abortion access is clear, there remains a lack of understanding regarding its effects beyond abortion-related outcomes, specifically for women in midlife. States from California to New York have been stockpiling abortion pills as the Supreme Court prepares to weigh in on its first abortion case since overturning Roe v. Wade. The court on Tuesday will hear oral arguments on whether to limit the use of mifepristone, one of two drugs most commonly used for abortions in the US. At stake is access to the pill through the mail, as well as whether to curb its use from the current limit of 10 weeks pregnancy to seven weeks. In California, Governor Gavin Newsom said last year that his state will build supplies of up to 2 million misoprostol pills. New York and Maryland, two places where voters will decide whether to amend their state constitutions to protect reproductive rights this fall, have announced plans to buy 150,000 doses of misoprostol and 29,900 mifepristone pills, respectively. Oregon has 22,500 doses of mifepristone in reserves. New Mexico, where 69% of abortions are provided to patients traveling from out of state due to restrictions, has 4,383 units of misoprostol set aside — enough to cover a statewide need for nearly six months. A judgment making mifepristone less available will further limit access to legal abortion at a time when it’s already been significantly reduced in the US. 5 things we don’t know about abortion in the US (but could with better reporting): How many abortions? How many women harmed by abortion? How many late term abortions? How many mail order abortions? How many babies born alive? According to this article put out by the Charlotte Lozier Institute, Oklahoma and Minnesota were ranked one and two in the country, respectively, for the quality and timeliness of their state abortion reporting, but there is still so much across the country that goes unreported. https://lnkd.in/gqSn4kzC

Excellent article covering our debt to the Global South regarding SMA and misoprostol-only medication abortion and our need to embrace a human rights perspective informed by intersectionality and a reproductive justice framework. 👏🏼
"SMA works against abortion stigma. By making abortion safe outside the medical system activists began to destigmatize it and normalize it."
