If you're seeking insightful perspectives on skill development in the era of automation and GenAI, I recommend exploring Matt Beane's work. Looking forward to delving into his book "The Skill Code" but right now I'm still digesting takeaways from a thought-provoking discussion facilitated by The Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp) in their Next Practices series. 🤔 Skill development requires challenge, complexity & connection. 🤔 Learning/skill development are typically viewed as a "tax" on operations - a negative hit to productivity and output. 🤔 GenAI and other automation tools are purposely designed as 'self-serve' - to increase efficiency & productivity - in part to counteract this perceived tax. 🤔 This self-serve focus, however, weakens the bonds between experts and junior staff - there is no personal connection. 🤔 Complexity is often lacking as well. Getting targeted answers quickly does not allow novices to build the understanding of context/patterns/relationships foundational to higher-level judgment. 🤔 As is challenge. To develop skills and fuel growth people need exposure to 'impossible problems' that seem beyond their capabilities. GenAI & automation tools are often applied to automating mundane/repetitive tasks, vs exploring - and struggling with - the challenging unknown. 🤔 Not a new revelation, but corporate L&D (and education generally) overinvests in formal training, elearning etc. rather than enriching collaborative bonds among colleagues, esp through application & practice. There is exciting work ahead to realize the full value of automation & GenAI tools: reducing the perceived operational tax while maintaining the challenge, complexity and human connection that fuel skill development.
