Remember the stress of moving day at college? Now imagine tolerating that stress as an autistic student with sensitivities to all the movement, noise, smells, and general chaos. LETU Bridges students are allowed to move in a day early to avoid some of this stress. Just one of the benefits of an autism support program on campus! #LETU #bridgesprogram

Autism acceptance should be a focus in schools year-round, not just in April. Here are 4 ways that districts can promote autism acceptance every day of the year: ✅ 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 - Autistic people are experts on their autism, and asking them for input makes for an inclusive learning environment. ✅ 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 - School discipline policies and procedures are usually written based on neurotypical student behaviors, and this often works against autistic students. ✅ 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 - This requires both autistic people and neurotypical people to put in equal effort to communicate and understand each other. ✅ 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - Everyone needs to see neurodivergent people represented in a positive light. This can be done in several ways, including purchasing a curriculum that includes autistic characters and perspectives. It's concerning to see the rise in the number of American children qualifying for special education services, reaching a record 7.5 million students in U.S. schools as of 2022-2023. This includes children with autism, speech impairments, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, making up 15.2% of the public-school student population, up from less than 13% a decade earlier. Schools are facing challenges in finding enough teachers to meet the growing needs of these students. It's crucial to address this issue to ensure that every child receives the support they require to thrive in an educational setting.
