In a digital world, we can sometimes overlook that ~70% of consumer spending in retail happens in physical stores. "AMERICA'S OLDEST DEPARTMENT STORE TO RETURN YEARS AFTER CLOSING ALL LOCATIONS" "Regal Brands acquired Lord & Taylor’s intellectual property earlier this year after a rocky period for the retailer.  Its prior owner, the Saadia Group, defaulted on $45 million in debt and was forced to relinquish its assets... The brand aims to position itself as a purveyor of elevated fashion—steering clear of both ultra-luxury and fast fashion." This is such an interesting #Retail comeback plan (w/ USA call centers) for an American icon. Marshall Fields should come back too. Authentic Brands Group should bring back the Barneys New York Warehouse Sales in USA. Loehmann's also went out of business in 2014 during the Great Retail Offshoring of America. The biggest travesty of all was Bloomingdale's closing its Skokie, IL Westfield Old Orchard Mall location. Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield in Paris, France (w/ EU subsidiaries - https://lnkd.in/g7R3BitX ) owns the legendary Chicago-area beautiful outdoor mall. Part of a casual personal post I wrote to friends earlier this year - "USA MILITARY NEEDS TO SEIZE WESTFIELD OLD ORCHARD, AS IT IS A DISGUSTING HAZARD ZONE, WITH TOTALLY EXPOSED LARGE HOLES IN THE BUILDING STRUCTURE FOR RATS AND MICE... Currently, Bloomingdales is housing some sort of TITANIC EXHIBIT, awaiting DEMOLITION FOR A HIGH-RISE BUILDING AND COMMUNITY, WHICH IS AN INSANELY STUPID AND SCARY IDEA - "Huge part of Westfield Old Orchard Mall to be demolished, making way for apartments and more" "Phase 1" of the project includes the demolition of the giant store, which originally opened its doors at the mall in 1995. Bloomingdale's shuttered in 2022, leaving Nordstrom's and Macy's as the mall's only department store anchors." THE GLOBALISTS ARE LITERALLY MURDERING OUR BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR MALL. I could tell by all the broken elevators and atrocious cracked tiles at the former Bloomingdales that the French company was INTENTIONALLY LETTING BLOOMINGDALES ROT!! THEY ARE DOING THE EXACT SAME THING WITH MACYS TO A DISTURBING DEGREE AND EVEN TO NORDSTROM. THEY WANT TO ELIMINATE THE MALL, EXCEPT FOR THE ELITE STORES FOR THE SUPER WEALTHY. For a Mall Operator to have loose S-hooks, vintage turnbuckles and construction parts within reach of children and hoodlums who are high and inebriated and can simply DROP THEM ONTO THE pedestrians below is INSANE. I cleaned up a bit, but SERIOUSLY? FRIENDS, WE ARE AT WAR, QUITE LITERALLY.... OLD ORCHARD MALL SHOULD BE RESURRECTED AS A MALL FOR FAMILIES, NOT HIGH-RISE APARTMENT-LIVING, WHEN WE ARE ALREADY OVERFLOWING WITH THE OPTIMA APARTMENTS OVER THE KENNEDY EXPRESSWAY, AND WE HAVE WAY TOO MANY APARTMENTS IN WILMETTE AND SKOKIE, AND THE AIRPORTS ARE CHANGING FLIGHT PATTERNS TO HAVE NON-STOP AIR TRAFFIC OVER SKOKIE AND WILMETTE. Should we be surprised that the suburb of MOUNT PROSPECT, ILLINOIS sold all of the UNITED AIRLINES LAND FOR APPROX $55M TO THE GOVERNMENTS OF INDIA, QATAR, AND IRAN."

I'm not shocked to read rooms+spaces went from dozens of stores to just two. In retail, you win on either price, convenience, selection, or experience. The massive location I visited when it first opened carried basically the same products I could find at my local Walmart.... but at 3x the price. The stores weren't particularly convenient in terms of either hours or location... ... and although the store was practically deserted when I visited, I wasn't approached by any of the staff members working to see if I needed any help. Not even once. Translation? They aren't winning on ANY of the four retail value propositions. I give kudos to Doug Putman for trying something new and "swinging for the fences" when everybody else was shuttering stores. I'd argue we need more of that bold, entrepreneurial thinking in Canada. But I think Rooms+Spaces is a failed experiment... ... and that moving them into Toys R Us stores is a huge mistake. I wouldn't waste valuable real estate in a toy store trying to sell houseware items; that's not why people are visiting a toy store. (And if they do see something they like, at three times the price they can get it elsewhere, they'll just pull out their phones and order it from Amazon.) Instead, I'd use that space to make the toy shopping an EXPERIENCE. ➡ Places to play, not just rows upon rows of boxed toys on shelf... ➡ Interactive displays versus static signage... ➡ A loyalty program that can be used to unlock special in-store activities... I am extremely keen for FoundPop to help brands however it can after the MATCHES debacle. We have access to spaces and obviously furniture. Unfortunately, as we are all aware, the retail landscape has witnessed significant changes in recent months, from the collapse of Ted Baker, The Body Shop, MUJI Europe Holdings Limited to luxury e-tailer MATCHES. 🤍 Stand out with White Space🤍 Did you know that how closely you position your merchandise speaks volumes to your customers? Lots of space between merchandise conveys luxury, which is why you'll find items spaced farther apart in high-end boutiques than in a discount store. That's not to say that closely-spaced items are a bad thing. If you're having a large sale and want to show customers how much bang they can get for their buck, it makes sense to have plenty of products on display. Whatever you do, don't ever overcrowd your racks or shelves. Make sure there's plenty of room for customers to peruse your products and that everything stays neat and tidy.  Just a few thoughts to add to the discussion below: In 2016, Corso Como opened a NYC store at the Seaport. The location was difficult, however, the area was in development and I guess the company was focusing on the future. The space included the store and the gallery wing, designed to host events and exhibitions. The assortment of the store itself read "designers". To me, it was the best-curated buy I have seen. Whoever bought it - had great taste and understanding of the urban client. The idea was simple and modern: to create an environment/place that caters to the test of the fashion community - a place to hang out and shop (this is the ongoing dream of every luxury CEO). It didn't work out. The store was closed after a few years. Remember SAKS+Barney's project? Similar. To make these types of initiatives successful you need serious planning, the right people, consistency, financing, and a few other things:)) However, the concept is growing in popularity and we do see a trend: Marsèll, a Made in Italy, high-quality Italian footwear and accessory brand, has just opened its first flagship store in Milan, at Via della Spiga 42, in the city’s "Quadrilatero della Moda" fashion district. The store is the result of eight months of close collaboration between Marsell and the Berlin-based Lotto Studio. Together, they have designed a space where the whole of Marsèll’s offer and identity can express themselves at their best within an open, modern, comfortable, and somehow “solemn” space. The project’s brief had the aim of creating a unique space where the modular environments seen in the rigorous architecture of Marcel Breuer, a major exponent of the Bauhaus design movement, could blend with the meditative atmospheres of Carlo Scarpa, one of the most important 20th-century designers and architects. This space hosts long terraces that delimit a central area, imagined as an exhibition space. It is accessed via a large staircase characterized by a walnut bookcase conceived as a permanent work of art, which extends to the full height of the space and forms a connecting element between the floors. The idea - shopping, visiting the "art" and creating the community. This is the future of retail. The future can be bright for those who can do it right. #retail# #fashion #wwd #bof
