As Breast Cancer Awareness month wraps up, I am especially thankful that I got the opportunity to share about our PLAN Trial, an international multicentre randomized controlled trial in 1,602 patients evaluating lidocaine infusions to prevent persistent pain after breast cancer surgery. Given that chronic pain can be difficult to treat, it is important that we look to identify measures to prevent it altogether. We will never know the time and date of the next car crash, but we know the time and date of the next surgery, and surgery is responsible for almost 1/4 of chronic pain cases in society. 🌟The presence of abnormal cells within a mammary duct in the breast is referred to as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). 🌟DCIS is regarded as the earliest form of breast cancer. DCIS is noninvasive, which means that it has not metastasized beyond the mammary duct and has a low likelihood of progressing to an invasive form. 🌟DCIS is typically detected during a mammogram that is conducted as part of breast cancer surveillance or to investigate a breast lump. 🌟While DCIS is not an emergency, it does necessitate an evaluation and the consideration of treatment options. The treatment may involve the removal of all breast tissue or the combination of breast-conserving surgery and radiation. Another alternative to surgery may be a clinical trial that investigates active monitoring. The goal of 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲 is to ensure that no cancer cells remain in the breast while preserving as much of the breast as possible.
