Can Drones Dodge Obstacles in a Split Second? "Rapid Collision Detection for Multicopter Trajectories" - This research introduces a rapid, continuous-time collision detection algorithm for multicopter trajectories that detects intersections with static and dynamic convex obstacles. - The algorithm is integrated with a multicopter trajectory generation method for fast obstacle-aware motion planning. - It tackles the challenge of navigating through nonconvex spaces created by convex obstacles, where feasible trajectories are harder to compute. - Monte Carlo simulations and experiments show the algorithm's ability to plan collision-free trajectories in milliseconds, ensuring real-time performance even in environments with moving obstacles. How do fully autonomous drones see the world? 🌎 Primarily with cameras and depth sensors. However, cameras are limited to working under good lighting conditions, while depth cameras have a limited range.... Researchers from ETH Zürich are working on maximizing the robustness of autonomously navigating robots, by combining a millimeter form factor 64 pixel depth sensor and a low-resolution grayscale camera 💡 In their work, a nano-UAV learns to detect and fly through a gate with a lightweight autonomous navigation system based on two tinyML convolutional neural network models trained in simulation, running entirely onboard in 7.6 ms and with an accuracy above 91%. The team were able to achieve a failure probability down to 1.2 * 10^-3 crash/meter, experiencing only two crashes on a cumulative flight distance of 1.7 km. #drones #robotics #autonomy

Can Drones Use Collisions to Plan Better? "Exploiting collisions for sampling-based multicopter motion planning" - This research introduces a novel sampling-based motion planning method for multicopters that intentionally exploit collisions to enhance navigation. - Built on the RRT* algorithm, the method generates motion primitives and detects intersections with obstacles, incorporating these collision states into the planning process. - By allowing collisions, the planner improves its performance in narrow, confined spaces like tunnels, where traditional collision-avoidance strategies struggle. - Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of tracking the collision-inclusive trajectories, highlighting the benefits of this approach in challenging environments.
