Anganwadis have been serving as the backbone of early childhood development in India for generations. These centres were established by the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) to provide essential support for young children's health, nutrition, and pre-school education. With a significant proportion of young children enrolled (ASER 2022 reports 66.8% of 3-year-olds and 61.2% of 4-year-olds), Anganwadis present a tremendous opportunity to enhance early learning outcomes. However, achieving this goal requires investing in the capacity of those on the frontline, the Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), who directly shape these young minds. Project 'Kriya Kalap Se Baal Shikshan' is a significant step forward in this direction. These workshops focus on critical aspects of child development, particularly the 'sensitive period,' and fostering ideal learning environments within Anganwadis. Thanks to the government's efforts, Anganwadis are transforming into vibrant learning institutions. As demand for quality preschool education grows, we're seeing amazing progress, especially in Tamil Nadu. By adding female staff members, they've doubled the time spent on #EarlyChildhoodCare and Education (ECCE) and improved health and nutrition activities. This successful model can be replicated nationwide, with states like #UttarPradesh and #Maharashtra already exploring similar enhancements. With a goal of one educator per 20 children per center, we're on the path to providing every child with the high-quality education they deserve. This is a crucial moment to invest in our youngest citizens as the 18th Lok Sabha takes charge. Most government schools have an anganwadi attached to them. These anganwadis serve as centers for early childhood care and nutrition for women and children in the local community. When we began our school infrastructure development projects, we also focused on upgrading anganwadi facilities and providing toys and learning materials. However, in 2021, we realized that the primary focus was on the health and nutrition of children, with less emphasis on early learning. We also recognized that anganwadi teachers were overburdened and lacked the capacity to provide adequate early learning support. 🌟 Why does LECIN exist? 🌟 1️⃣ UDISE 2018-19 data reveals that many children in rural and disadvantaged communities lack access to preschool education, highlighting the crucial need for outreach and engagement. Keep in mind that education remains the sole pathway to escape poverty. 2️⃣ Reports from NCERT indicate that numerous anganwadis suffer from inadequate infrastructure, lack of teaching materials, and untrained educators, hindering the delivery of quality early childhood education. Due to untrained educators and a shortage of educational resources, the majority of anganwadis have been relegated to mere food distribution centers. 3️⃣ NEP 2020 stresses play-based and activity-based learning, advocating for curriculum reforms to shift from rote learning to experiential and holistic approaches. Even in preschools where parents pay fees, rote learning is prevalent, let alone in anganwadis catering to underprivileged children. These findings emphasize the pressing need for comprehensive reforms and investments in early childhood education to ensure every child, regardless of their background, receives the essential learning experiences for success in school and beyond.
