This is how some companies are managing the accountant shortage... Based on the fact that they got an 85K base for a Staff Accountant role I think it's safe to assume they are in a bigger market where there is stiff competition for accountant & finance talent. To address their original question- "what should I study to show these guys that I'm coachable?" I think it's first important to point out the fact that the company definitely knew this person didn't have a ton of practical accounting experience. They would have seen the resume... This means they already thought this person was coachable or had some potential! So my first comment would be to have more faith in yourself as a candidate! Because the company certainly does. Second- There are tons of resources available on YouTube and other websites that can help teach the basics of accounting that you would be doing in a Staff Accountant type of role. I would recommend binging through the relevant videos (that are recent), to get up to date on trial balances, adjusting journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, prepaids, and the other blocking and tackling of accounting.
