This is a good perspective to understand the needs of the Dutch Caribbean islands. The education system on the islands and the opportunities for young graduates need to be set high on the political agenda and this comes also with a corresponding budget that should be allocated to the education. Priorities at the moment should be in investing in our human capital through education and community engagement to be able to maintain our cultural identity in place.

I would like to share with you a little bit of the blog that the newspaper El Financiero dedicated to us. My colleagues and I carried out this project with a lot of effort and dedication. The project is about cricket flour and all the benefits it has. How it can replace regular flour and the ecological impact it can have. We aimed to make the project as low-cost as possible, while maintaining product quality. I often hear assertions such as “trains don’t work because a, b and c,” or “bikes don’t work because of d, e and f.” Every day, the Netherlands proves that trains and bikes both work well – when they work together. When trains and bikes are treated as components in one integrated passenger mobility system, in which passengers may first bike to the station, then take the train, and finally alight and bike to the destination, trains and bikes work together as complementary players on the same collaborative team. In his new dissertation, Het verstandshuwelijk van fiets en trein: Kansrijke ketenmobiliteit sinds 1900 (The Bicycle-Train Marriage of Convenience: The Promise of Chain Mobility Since 1900), Jan Ploeger, drawing upon original archival research, extensive interviews, and decades of personal professional experience, shows how trains and bikes both work well when they are united in a bike-train-bike system of chain mobility. The innovation began as improvisation by travelers themselves. Engineers, policymakers and planners – refraining from presuming that they knew better than the people they served – observed, learned, adapted and improved. Dr Jan Ploeger successfully defended his dissertation yesterday, at Eindhoven University of Technology. His promoter was Ruth Oldenziel; his copromoter was Frank Veraart. The rest of his committee consisted of Greet De Block, Bert Van Wee, Frauke Behrendt and me. He was also advised by Adri Albert de la Bruheze. Fred Langerak presided.
