Recruiters say job-hunting government lawyers might have more success landing at law firms than at legal departments, where competition for openings is especially fierce. “Every in-house role attracts hundreds of applicants,” said Sarah Van Steenburg, a recruiter in Major, Lindsey & Africa's Washington, D.C., office. “You need a strong commercial fit to land those roles. Companies look for candidates whose government experience aligns directly with their business needs.” But she said the outlook at law firms is challenging as well. “There just aren’t enough seats. Firms operate on attrition—people leaving for government or in-house roles. Now, with so many trying to come back, the market could become oversaturated, especially for midlevel attorneys without a strong commercial skill set.” Among government lawyers targeting law firms, “the higher the level of the government position, the more attractive the candidate. Firms value relationships and regulatory expertise that can be deployed on behalf of their clients," said Mike Evers of Evers Legal Search in Chicago. The kind of law lawyers focused on in their government job also makes a difference, Van Steenburg said. “Someone who led a government enforcement division is easier to market to clients than a midlevel lawyer focused on niche policy work.” To maximize their chances of getting hired, government lawyers need to immerse themselves in networking, including speaking with attorneys who've transitioned from government jobs to the private sector, recruiters say. "The biggest shift is thinking about your skills in business terms,” Van Steenburg said. “What do you bring to a firm or company’s bottom line? Lawyers coming out of government often haven’t had to consider their value proposition this way.” Full story from Trudy Knockless: https://lnkd.in/g9k2-TRD
