Though I'm not a paralegal anymore, I'm still in several paralegal groups on various platforms. One of the most common trends I see posted refers to paralegals feeling pigeonholed into a specific area of law or in the legal field entirely. If this sounds familiar and you're looking to make a change, here are some other areas to consider:
*Legal tech - this is what I did! Don't have a tech degree? No big deal! This could be just the gig for you if you are tech savvy. What software and tech do you use daily? Start with your firm's case management system and go from there. This is ideal for staff who have helped their firm build out their tech in house.
*Consulting - do you know the ins and outs of how a law firm operates? Do you enjoy developing new processes and solving problems your firm encounters? Consider joining one of the many consulting companies out there, or start your own!
*New client intake - do you enjoy helping new clients start their legal journey? Do you like being in legal but you want to switch practice areas? One of the easiest ways to do so is in intake. Bonus: if you are looking for WFH, a lot of these jobs are remote and/or offer flex or non-traditional hours.
*For PI or insurance defense paras - go from legal to adjuster, claim rep, appraiser, or simply consider switching sides. Though admittedly I only ever did plaintiff's side work, I confess I was tempted by the dark side a few times. :)
