For patients with atrial fibrillation, Good Samaritan Hospital’s cardiac electrophysiology team is now implanting Watchman Flex Pro devices with markers allowing for precise placement and a coating for less inflammation and faster healing. The device is placed into the left atrial appendage of the heart and is permanently closed off to keep blood clots from escaping. It’s also effective in preventing strokes in patients who are unable to tolerate blood thinners. Advanced Life Support: Will REBOA feature in the future? REBOA is a technique used to occlude the AORTA and was initially used to assist with major trauma and haemorrhage control in those with abdominal and lower limb injury. As the attached research piece discusses there may be positive benefits for non-traumatic cardiac arrest. The benefits cited are: 1: Stimulation of the Baroreceptor reflex 2: Increased Coronary perfusion pressure 3: Could counteract the negative effects of current adrenaline dosing. Whilst this is a new and novel approach and more evidence is required, I feel it is important as clinicians to "scan the horizon" and see how practice might change in our own settings. I think having read the piece that it may show some benefit for certain patients who can be attended by highly skilled practitioners quickly, there will always be patients where this may not be appropriate. Cardiac catheterization (kath-uh-tur-ih-ZAY-shun) is a test or treatment for certain heart or blood vessel problems, such as clogged arteries or irregular heartbeats. It uses a thin, hollow tube called a catheter. The tube is guided through a blood vessel to the heart. Cardiac catheterization gives important details about the heart muscle, heart valves and blood vessels in the heart. Cardiac catheterization is usually done in a hospital room with special X-ray and imaging machines.
