As of today, I’m back in Riga and at work after an incredible six-month research fellowship at Columbia University in New York City! So much has been accomplished, and so much has happened during this time that one post won’t do it justice, but for now, let me share three key takeaways: - It often takes stepping away to truly appreciate what we have. These six months have been transformative—not only have I learned a great deal, recharged my energy, and gathered a wealth of ideas and contacts to pursue, but I’ve also come to realize how much I’ve taken for granted back home (like accessible healthcare, free education, and safe, clean streets, to name just a few). New York City and Columbia University are amazing, and I would go back in a heartbeat, but so is Riga and the many institutions I hold dear here! Conclusion: I know it can be challenging with family commitments, but I strongly encourage every professional, academic, and public official from the Baltics to consider applying for fellowships like the Baltic-American Freedom Foundation, Fulbright, Eisenhower Fellowships, and other U.S. programs. Don’t underestimate yourself or the immense value of this experience! - The world has become so interconnected that the problems we face are similar everywhere—only the scale and degree vary. Whether it’s education, the future of jobs, or the contemporary art ecosystem, there are lessons to be learned from the U.S., but many challenges remain universal, with no definitive solutions yet. This is both fascinating and encouraging because it means even small countries like Latvia can contribute global solutions. In many respects, our size makes us an ideal testing ground. We just need a bit more courage and agility. Conclusion: To paraphrase Kennedy, ask not what the world can do for you, but what you can do for the world:) Addressing global challenges starts at home. Get your hands dirty at the local level, but always think with broader ambitions in mind. My ERDA, Kim? Contemporary Art Centre team and I are working on this now—I’ll keep you posted on our progress! - It may sound cliché, but you can’t “fix” the world if you haven’t first “fixed” yourself. Of course, this is a lifelong journey, but setting your priorities straight, cultivating peace and love at home, building your mental and physical resilience are absolutely essential. I couldn’t have achieved anything or gotten anywhere without the support and love of my family. There are no words to express my gratitude! Conclusion: Your personal well-being—intellectual, mental, physical, spiritual, and relational—is the foundation of everything else. From micro to macro, so to speak! :) A couple of projects have already started as a result of this fellowship, and I can’t wait to share them publicly very soon! It’s thanks to the Baltic-American Freedom Foundation and Columbia University that all of this was possible—I am, and will always be, forever grateful!!!

After returning to Germany from my semester abroad in Asia, I am able to see my studies in a different view. In Asia, the focus is strongly on the needs of students: shorter lectures lasting one hour, followed by practical sessions on separate days. This approach not only enhances theoretical understanding but also gives students more space to apply what they’ve learned in practice. In Germany, practical experience is also important, but we often have 4-5 hour block lectures. Do we really need so much theory at once? Wouldn’t it be more effective to deliver the theory in a more compact way and allocate more time for practical work? Especially in a country where many students work part-time to finance their studies, we could benefit from a system that better balances theory and practice. One key takeaway from my semester abroad is that education systems around the world each have their strengths. Rather than criticizing each other, countries should cooperate and learn from one another. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but through exchange and collaboration, we could adopt the best aspects of different approaches to ultimately improve education for students everywhere. #Education #Germany #Asia #Learning #PracticalExperience #Collaboration #StudyAbroad #FutureOfEducation

Europe is the top of 🌎. Europe is the top destination for international students, which is fantastic. However, let me tell you about a fact that often gets overlooked. Nearly 54% of the global international student community (based on 2021 data, which is about 6.5 million students) comes from Asian countries. This means that many of these students are moving from one world to another. But what kind of support are local education consultants or any advisory systems providing to a student coming from China to Germany in terms of adaptation, language, and life integration? Unfortunately, the main focus tends to be on making more money. At Toedur, we are committed to addressing this issue fundamentally and working towards sustainable student mobility.
