Took the family to see Mercer Labs in NYC. A couple take-aways: 1. The production value and the quality of the tech is exceptional, they didn't skimp on budget 2. The place operates on awe, similar to Refik Anadol's work in some ways, in that it uses monumental scale and cinema grade VFX for immersion 3. To me the most successful installations combined programatic lighting and mirrors, a more tech-forward take on the Kusama infinity room 4. The sound design is fantastic, extremely well considered and executed. I still wonder if this place can operate as an attraction, as far as I can tell there aren't many areas specifically set aside for rotating content. That said, so many of these pieces are canvases that could accommodate new content. My hope is that they take a page from ARTECHOUSE, Cosm and Sphere Entertainment Co. and ultimately serves less as a more or less permanent experience like Meow Wolf, and becomes a canvas for new art and IP. Amaechi Uzoigwe - I kept thinking how well this could serve RTJ content :)

👀🎰 Inside the Studio 🎰👀 🐸🔥 The creative process: A perfect potion of structure and insanity 🔥🐸 There’s something magical about seeing a game come to life — a journey from a blank canvas to a final product players worldwide can enjoy. When we begin, it’s all potential and ideas floating in the ether, concepts just waiting for the structure (and a touch of insanity) to bring them to life. The process is equal parts chaos and control. Early stages are filled with sketching, brainstorming, and reworking — a rollercoaster where inspiration strikes at the oddest times. Then comes the rhythm and discipline: transforming dreams into designs, storylines, mechanics, and art. It’s a blend of calculated structure and wild leaps of faith that keep things fresh and surprising. Looking back, it’s clear that this blend of planning and unpredictability is what creates something truly remarkable. We build from the unknown, trust the process, and turn vision into reality. Here’s to the organized chaos, the small wins, the countless hours, and the beautiful, creative madness that turns “nothing” into something amazing! 🚀🎮🌌 #GameDev #CreativeProcess #Innovation #CreativeMadness #ArtToLife Do you thrive in a structured, chaotic environment? ✨ Evoke Studios Team Spotlights ✨ It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these but we’re delighted to welcome to the team… 👋🏻 Daniel Fernandez - Media Server Specialist & Content Designer. Danny has being doing jobs for Evoke Studios for the past two years but joined the team full time in April 2024. ☀️What does your role / job entail? “As Media server specialist I have to programme and operate media servers for Live events and installations, programming tours, adjusting video mappings, broadcast studios, use different devices to control shows...As Content Designer and 3D generalist, I create 2d and 3d content for live events, bands, broadcast…” 💭 If Danny had to summarise his job in one sentence it would be “Find new ways to amaze people with technology.” 🖤 Danny’s favourite thing about his job is that every project is a new adventure full of challenges. The best part of Evoke Studios is the passion that every person in the team has for what they do. My VFX Journey - The Beginning Thanks to the influence of my father, who loves movies, I watched "Back to the Future" when I was a child, and ever since then, I've been interested in films. However, I didn't have the confidence to pursue my dreams of working in the film industry. Instead, I thought it would be great if I could learn English, which I loved as much as filmmaking, and find a job related to English. Nonetheless, that dream never left my mind. During my study abroad trip to Australia in my fourth year of university, I decided to make videos and post them on YouTube. With the help of my friends, I created a video for learning English. That experience reignited my passion for film. After entering the workforce, I worked as an IT support engineer, but in my spare time, I taught myself After Effects and continued to create videos, and post on YouTube. At the same time, I explored many interests. I attended school for graphic design, programming, and web design. But for some reason, none of these paths felt right. I always had a passion for film in the back of my mind and just couldn't give up. I wanted to work overseas, so to gain more specialized knowledge, I attended a school where I could study CGI. That's where I discovered the role of a compositor. I learned all the CG processes, but compositing is what I loved most. From then on, I began to think that I wanted to be in an environment where I could learn about compositing overseas. I did a lot of research and spoke to many professional VFX artists to decide where I would study Compositing, and what they told me was very helpful. To be continued... #AlphaChromatica #VFX #Compositing #myvfxjorney #HirokaOizumi

Pursuing my dreams in Design from Otis College of Art and Design in the USA at the age of 19. What’s the best part about it? I am doing it on the best possible scholarship. Filmmaking is the process of making a motion picture, which involves many stages like development, pre-production, production, post-production and distribution. Design plays a crucial role across this entire process. Production design visually brings the story to life. It involves creating the overall look of the film through set design, props, costumes, makeup and more. The production designer works closely with the director and cinematographer to craft a cohesive visual language that complements the narrative. With the rise of streaming platforms, filmmaking has exploded globally. Audiences crave immersive cinematic experiences. This makes a film's visual presentation more important than ever. Production design has become a highly sought-after skillset. My studies at Otis College of Art and Design have allowed me to understand design for film and games first-hand. In my games and entertainment course, we moved from research and concept boards to fabricating characters and props. Seeing our creative visions come to life on computer screens was incredibly rewarding. Filmmaking is a collaborative art. As I look ahead in my career, I'm eager to collaborate with talented creatives from around the world. There is so much we can learn from each other's unique perspectives on design for the moving image. I also worked on making a portfolio, during my final exams, and within a very short time period. I also wrote sop, and got a few letters of recommendations. This was one of the challenging times for me, as I had to finish everything during my exams as well as study hard. What insights can you share from your own work in film or creative industries? I'd love to keep this conversation going. #collegelife #filmmaking #art

I believe that there is a push to remove Narrative Design as a position in the game industry overall, from the lack of jobs I've seen and the few interviews I've had lately in my job search, among a few other factors. I think the new approach is that it will cease to exist unless we do something. I really feel Narrative Designers should rise up and solidify what they do, to teach and explain to people, or else a very important role may be lost forever. How I explain Narrative Design is that you are the fluid and flexible warden of the game's story, world, and characters. You keep track of it and can change it at moments notice to fit the teams needs, budget, and more, while keeping it high quality and having it all make sense. A Narrative Designer can see problems in the story before they arise, understand what audiences like and want, and usually come with a library of knowledge of all forms of media. When I started my adventures in Narrative Design, it was under the umbrella of Transmedia Specialist. Someone who understands many different aspects of story across multiple mediums, not just games. Someone who has dedicated their life to understanding why people connect with stories, worlds, and characters. It is a vocation just like programming, art, and sound design. Narrative Design is not a joke. The miracles of story I've had to pull off because of XYZ issues more than justify the position's existence, in my eyes. The insights a Narrative Design brings to cohesion of the whole is invaluable. To run without one is to court folly, and I have seen countless games fall simply because they didn't care to even have a slimmer of narrative. But if we Narrative Designers do nothing, I can realistically see it disappearing, for no other reason than the industry as a whole just does not understand how to utilize us.
